Craft Club PYO and possible jam making

I can't make that weekend either, hen weekend and I'm bridesmaid so would be considered pretty bad form to blow it out..

If there's another one later in the year I'd love to come along

Hello, was notified about this by gaijingirl. As it's so close to me, it would be rude not to come along.

A quick check reveals that Hayes Street Farm is just half a mile from Hayes station which is a shorter journey - 47 minutes by train from Brixton (45 mins Herne Hill). Is it still operating though and what do they grow and when is their harvesting time.. ???
Hayes Street farm is also only about a mile from Bromley South Station which is much easier for those coming from Brixton/Herne Hill.

I'm quite happy to pick people up from the station and give them a lift.

Oh that'd be brilliant. I didn't bother mentioning Bromley South as it would be a faff without a lift but if you will come pick us up that'd be great and cut about 30 mins off the train journey!!

Should point out though that we still don't know for sure what the harvest situation is - it has been very wet this past few weeks (I heard tonight the wettest 6 months for 40 years or something similar) - which may have affected the outcome. I'll give a ring over the next few days and see what they reckon.

There are also 2 buses which go from Bromley South to the farm, if anyone is coming later.

Right - other girls get wedding coordinators - we have a jamming coordinator. Maggot has very kindly offered to go and see what the situation is with the fruit at Hayes Street Farm after this extremely wet period. There is a chance that there will not be much to pick.... :(

However, fingers crossed because I really need to get rid of jars!! (everyone who I gave jam/marmalade to from our jam making over the last couple of years has taken to collecting jars in the hope of getting more as it was all so good!! I have a LOT of jars!! :D )

Gaijingirl mentioned this to me when we met at offline last week - unfortunately I'm going to visit my dad that weekend so I can't come :(

Anyway I'll keep my eyes peeled for the next crafty meet-up.

Happy jamming everyone :)

I've just been there. They said the strawberries are about to be ready and will definitely be ok for the 23rd. The raspberries are possible but not definite.

e2a if anyone can't make the date we could always have more than one trip as I'd quite like to go later in the year for plums and other later fruits :)

yes please - would love to make damson jam... missed them last year :)

I'd like to come along to pick some fruit - but saddly can't do the making on the Sunday (open day at allotments). It's so close to us and would be a good day out :).

*prays very much for raspberries*

Thanks Maggot, you're a star :) I reckon if the rasps are not quite there yet, we should go ahead with the strawbs anyway - would that be ok for everyone?

I'm not a massive strawberry fan but home made is usually pretty tasty! although my esteemed mother says that strawberry is a difficult jam as it's hard to get the thickness right...

I'd be a lot more keen for raspberries too.. they just make better jam; but me free weekends are few and far between now.

The strawberries at Hayes Farm taste much better than the ones you usually get from supermarkets - if that's any help.

I'll pop back next weekend to find out the latest on the raspberry situation.

hey i am in this too, i hope, depends when we are going??

can someone remind me please?

i have got loads of jars.

We're picking fruit next Saturday (23rd) and making jam the following day (24th). Personally I'd like it to start picking fruit earlier rather than later (ie before midday) but given that I'm currently in a bit of a crisis with regards to freetime, I don't want to influence the decision too much in case I end up being unable to make it. What I may have to do it come for one day but not both, depending on how I get on with my work. Either way, please don't worry about jars - I have GAZILLIONS!!!

forgot we needed them... has anyone got some.. I can get some, if someone can tell me where from?

I think I have some left over - but certainly not enough. They sell them in Morley's in Brixton though, in the basement.

Right, trains from Brixton leave at 59 and 29 past the hour and call at Herne Hill 2 mins later. They take 18 mins to get to Bromley South. I'm flexible, so just decide which train you're gonna catch and i'll come and meet you.

super!

it looks like i will be able to make defn sunday and most likely on saturday. maybe 'herr choc' will join us as i won't see him much otherwise that weekend.

is the farm in chiselhurst maggot?

Well so far that's 3 of us voting for earlier. I may well cycle over if the weather is good - but maybe the rest of you could get the 10(ish?) train? Again, as I said before, there is a possibility I won't be able to make it - so don't make decisions on my behalf... but then you'd be picking by 11am ...

(is that early enough for you Alien Nation - or do you think the 9:30ish train and picking by 10:30am is better?)

:)
