Great news :)

although was thinking yesterday that maybe we should share the work a bit more fairly this time - last year I had a whale of a time eating cake and chatting, but you and Ms T looked like you were in jam boot camp

Oh I didn't mind that. It meant I got to exercise quality control (aka control freakery), mainly in the form of adding more and more lemon. It was you I felt sorry for, having your entire kitchen made pink and sticky, and it did drag on a bit!

I have become a bit of a whizz at jam making recently, but I think I will have to stick to doing this at my parents' house, because my father has a fruit cage, and it's usually pretty full of fruit, and my mother is now too ill to make jam! I made some fantastic redcurrant jelly last year (having sought tips on here as to how to rescue the stuff my father had tried to make), and expect to do the same this year, too.

Aren't there quite a lot of urbanites in Cambridge? Only, the fens are just full of fantastic PYO places, so if there is a crafty/jammy person in Cambridge, you could pick them in the fens and then make the jam in Cambridge? Just a thought - sorry if it's not helpful.... :)

I've just voted for both weekends - Jan upferrit too. We love jam! In the pan! lalalalalalalaaaaaaaaa

Stir stir stir the jam, gently in the pan

Merrily merrily merrily merrily

Life is just a ......

Jam?

We've never had too much jam. I've always taken as much as I can possibly take (allowing for other people to have some too) and it's never been too much.
I agree. I could have happily taken more jam. I thought it all worked out very well, and fairly too.

There are a number of urbanites in Cambridge, but they are unlikely to be reading this thread.

I aint no hippy ;) but I will be away for Solstice! :D

Nae bother if you do it without me, save me a jar or something

Is it official then - we're doing the 21 / 22???

Sounds good (shame you can't make it though Zenie).

I *think* that works for me. I now have a preserving pan similar to Ruby's, and a jam funnel. :)

i have voted too now, although still flexible, i would not come picking but basically will bring my knitting and will help stirring jam etc. in which case i would not "claim" for too many jars for me. but perhaps 2-3? i think last years jam worked out £1.80 per jar.

*BUMP*

This is next weekend... does anyone know what time the PYO place opens, what the address is and what would be a reasonable time to go a picking?

Ah, just done a bit of digging on last year's thread. The farm is here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.s...srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&ax=540539&ay=166589

And a few of us seemed to get the train from Herne Hill to Bromley south last year... is that the closest station Maggot? Shall we aim to start picking at 11am again, so that people have time to do whatever else they have planned for Saturday... how that sound?

I'll bring enough cash to cover the raspberries, so it doesn't get as complicated as last year... I can pick up some extra film lid thingies too - got a few left from last year, but not loads.

Sunday jamming - how does 1pm sound to people? I don't have any preserving pans at my place, just one big non-stick pan - so if anyone's got one that'd be helpful :D

Last thing... it was suggested that we also do a bit of bunting on Sunday, seeing as the actual jam making won't need all of us all of the time. I don't have a sewing machine though - so if people want to bunt then might need someone to bring over a portable-ish sewing machine :)

What have I missed?

(yes I will be numbering the jars again this year :o worked so well last year ;))

i have a funnel too.

in case we don't get the picking arranged then we could always buy (!) strawberries for instance there are good value british ones on brixton market.

i am looking forward to see you all next week. bee i need your adress please.

Well done Bee, you're sounding very organised.

I've just phoned the farm and the strawberries are just ready, but the raspberries aren't ready yet. I hope there some by Saturday. We could always buy some I suppose.

The address is : Hayes Street Farm, Hayes Lane, Hayes. BR2 7LB

Their phone number is : 020 8462 1186

They open at 8.30 on Saturdays. 11 start sounds fine to me. I'll be happy to pick people up from Bromley South again if they want.

Bromley South is the second nearest station. Hayes (Kent) is the nearest, but the trains to Hayes don't go anywhere near Herne Hill or Brixton. the trains to Hayes go from Charing Cross and stop at Waterloo East, London Bridge and include New Cross, Lewisham and Catford. Hayes is a 10 minute walk from the Farm.

Bromley South is a 20-25 minute walk from the farm, or you can get the 146 or 119 buses, you will see the farm on your left and get out at the next stop by the George pub.

Any more local info wanted?

I can bring my pan and funnel if required.
That'd be great if you could the more pans and funnels the better.

I'll PM my address and map to people in a bit :)

So it's fruit picking on Sat and jam making on Sunday - is that right?
yep :)

Saw han at offline, and got a bit excited about jam, so thought I'd better bump the thread :)

:( I really want raspberries not strawberries... also are we still going to pick if it's raining?

Lift from the station would be great Maggot :) we can sort out times nearer the time... actually might just cycle (from Bromley, not from home!)

Address sent to: Maggot; RubyToogood; toggle; wrysmile; zora; Choc; eme; gaijingirl; han; innit

Have I missed anyone off?

The lack of Raspberries is a worry. I'll check with the farm again this week, hopefully there will be some by saturday. Looks like the weekend after would be better, but I guess it's too late to change now.
