Covers which are better than the original

Teenage Fanclub "Goody Goody Gumdrops"....admittedly the original is awful and I was off my face when they played it at Reeading but I do remember dancing liek a look to it :D

Fuckit I've been searching for ages but cant find who its by

Its 'Forgot About Ray' - a country style pisstake on 'Forgot About Dre'. Its good :)

And 'Heard it through the Grapevine' by the slits is fucking dirty man, love it.

It clearly is - sounds more like the hymn that Laughin Len intended it to be. And I love Len, just ot head off any bollocks in that direction.

:D

Don't worry, there'll be no more bollocks here (than usual, anyway!).

I just cannot stand Buckley Jnr.

:D

But why would the jeebus command me to be *WRONG*??

:p

Husker Du's 8 Miles High.

All Mark Kozelek's AC/DC covers.

Firehose's cover of The Butthole Surfers Revolution Pt2

SteelPole Bathtub's version of Just What I Needed by The Cars.

This Mortal Coil's. Song to The Siren. But Liz Fraser could sing the horse racing results and make them sound great.

Fatima Mansions perved up version of Everything I Do (I do it for you)

Well he's DEAD. Happy? :p

That tune worked quite well in The Edukators but I saw him live and thought he sounded like a pig with a stick up its bottom.

"All Mark Kozelek's AC/DC covers."

BOLLOCKS!!!!
(though I do really like his "rock n roll singer" and "bad boy boogie")

Hurdy Gurdy Man by the Butthole Surfers is brilliant,
though I can't say it is much better - just a great cover.

Ok maybe not ALL of them. But as much as I love the originals, his covers add a lot of poignancy and sensitivity that's not normally associated with the DC. He should do Big Balls.

Walk on By - The Stranglers
Interstella Overdrive - Camper Van Beethoven
Waters of March - David Byrne (no real 'original' as such on this)

There was a spoken word cover of U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" which I have, ironically enough, been looking for for some time...

Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah
hmm, maybe, yes.
though on a general note, leonard cohen is waaaay out of jeff buckley's league.
(i do like jeff buckley though).

johnny cash, nine inch nails for me - though again, i do like nin.

Goldfrapp's cover of 'Let's Get Physical'. Beautiful stuff.

My mrs hates that. Has anyone heard the War of the Worlds remix? The whole album re-done with electronic music, its pretty good :)

Yo La Tengo's cover of Bert Jansch's Needle of Death (just prefer Georgia Hubley's voice)

Konki Duet's cover of Visage's Fade to Grey (beautiful accustic string quartet version)

Jimmy Scott's cover of Captain & Tennille's Love Will Keep Us Together (turns a bland pop song into something hearbreaking)

Grace Jones cover of Edith Piaf's La vie en rose (not a big fan of Piaf's masochistic drama and prefer crazy Gracie's cool disco version)

M Ward's cover of Bowie's Let's Dance

Stina Nordenstam's cover of Rod Steward's Sailing (kind of disturbing, but interesting)

Nina Simone's cover of Judy Collin's My Father

Fiona Apple's cover of The Beatles' Across the Universe

Bang on a Can's cover of all of Brian Eno's Music for Airports (gorgeous accustic version)

Faith No More's version of War Pigs.

My mate thinks I'm scum for preferring it over Black Sabbath's but tough.

Nostalgia 77 and Alice Russell's version of Seven Nation Army is better than the original.
This is so utterly wrong that I can't bear to read the rest of the thread

The b-side is an even better example of making a song sound better than the original !

I'll add Tonight I think I'm Gonna go Downtown by Mudhoney covering Jimmy Dale Gilmore !
