*weeps* do you prefer to eat say tesco's curry over exploring the streets of say bradford/whitechapel trying out various cheap eateries

Bad anology, you're not reading my posts properly, I said I wouldn't buy them but if they're good and the original band aint touring I don't have this fundementalist mindset against seeing them...

you said i'd rather see a good cover band over 1000 shite new bands... heres the thing about new bands, you have to go and see 'em to decide if they are shite... so effectivly you were saying I'd rather see a photocopy of something that was good, rather than getting out there and seeing new bands...

My local Chicago Rock has cover bands every Thursday.

Some are great..Stereotonics, Rebel Yell (Billy Idol) and Setting Sons (Paul Weller Mod era) were exceptional.

Some are not so good, but booze makes it better. :p

so no actual denial then? :D

You don't think a rolling eyes at your post is a rejection of the content of said post? Tbh I've better things to do than bang my head against your attitude, don't really want to derail another thread.:)

Well you’re assuming the only way to hear new bands is to see them live…there other ways, this thing called the internet is quite useful I’ve found.

not every new band has a myspace/internet site, and the tracks that they put on them might not be indicative of their quality live or not...

eta actually sorry that (we were talking about seeing bands live, cover or no, were we not) was my inferance... not born out by reading your posts :(

I guess you could also argue that you shouldn't listen to old music either when there's all this exciting new stuff out there. I think it pretty much goes with the download revolution in that people are digging up old tracks and downloading them and it makes sense people would want to hear it live.

Ok, I've thought of one...

Manic Hispanic, who cover classic punk songs in a Mexican snot-punk stylee.

See Mijo Goes to Jnr College for examples.

:)

I have never seen a tribute band but Im going to see Nouvelle Vague later this month and a few years back I went to see a band with a Mongolian throat singer ......?? Tuva ?? do covers.....kinda looking forward to Nouvelle Vague despite never having heard them....

Not a huge fan - and I think your selling your musical soul if your playing in one.

That said I think there's a place for the likes of dred zeppilin and hayseed dixie (which aren't really tribute or cover bands).

Also bands who play genres like - say - swing or skiffle or folk tend to rely mostly on covers, but it tends to be music that you dont hear very often - or at all - anywhere else. Unlike shite like No-way-sis etc.

My current band do a number of classic late 70s punk covers to pad out the set. But we definitely not going down the 'cover version'/pub rock road - its more to buy time till we write more material. And - tbh - they're a lot of fun to play.
