country songs for heartbreak. please?

Julie London had the first hit with it in the UK.

I'm rather partial to Mari Wilson's version too (I think I have it on vinyl somewhere).

Thanks for all the great suggestions...
I've written everything down, and will pester my music librarians with the list henceforth.

Willie Nelson did the trick last night, i kept skipping the more upbeat tracks to hear the slow ones, until finally entering coyote moon heartbreak heaven twangggg... Perfect :)

Can I just saw what a great thread this is. I'm not even heartbroken and these are all making me want to cry. If you really want to bawl, listen to Johnny Cash doing First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Yeah good thread but i think one of the reasons I liked country in the first place was cos I was usually feeling better than any of the charcaters in the songs. In a way supersad country is actually quite uplifting.

Also, i bought that Cash box set and now feel a bit cashed out. the originals are invariably better eg tom Petty 'Southern Accent"

I know exactly what you mean.
Don't read any of his autobiographies - they shattered a well loved illusion for me. He just goes on about Jesus and his bird.

Alright, but there's no excuse for all the God!

Yeah those Tennessee inbreds - they do some drugs, drink a bit, fuck around and then find God.

Meanwhile; here's the business

Tried to find a full version of the song but couldn't; nevertheless Robbie Fulks Is Your Friend!

Fulks is great. A real underground contrary fucker who did time in bluegrass bands and then got hired as a songwriter in Nashville and got fucked off with it and moved to Chicago away from all the billies to write some decent tunes, most notably "She Took A Lot Of Pills (And Died)".

Does a lot of irreverent stuff but can do some real hearttwangers such as n the concept "Couples In Trouble" album. The man's a genius and I don;t use that term lightly.

OK- i'm in the middle of a very messy break-up right now... :(
and... i need some really sincere, really sad country songs...

help, please? :)

I'VE GOT TEARS IN MY EARS
(FROM LYIN' ON MY BACK IN MY BED WHILE I CRY OVER YOU)
(Harold Barlow)

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
And the tears in my ears, they're off the
beaten track
Since you said "It's goodbye, we are through"
So if I should get water on the brain
You will know you're the one who is to blame
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin'on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
I've been cryin' these tears and soakin' in my
sack
Since the day I found you were untrue
And if I don't get up pretty soon
I'll turn into a sleepy lagoon
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
It's been so many years, my sacroiliac
Feels as though it's been soaked through and
through
Oh, you lied when you said we'd take the plunge
Now I know how it feels to be a sponge
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

Nobody mentioned Gram Parsons yet?

$1000 wedding, How Much I've Lied, Streets Of Baltimore, That's All It Took,

heartbreak galore

If we are going with Gram Parsons, how could you not have mentioned 'Love Hurts'?

partly that he didn't write it, although that's true of some of the tunes
I mentioned - it's very well known in other versions - Orbison's is better, partly it's a bit sweet, partly I just like other stuff he did better

but yeah, it's good and it's sad so it fits the bill.

I didn't mention Hot Burrito (I'm your toy) either and that's an absolute killer
