thank christ for that - you might not feel like posting 20 bajillion youtube clips if you're seriously hungover :p

There's a very funny Frank Zappa version of 'Ring of Fire' on his album "The best band you never heard in your life". The backstory is that Johnny Cash had agreed to appear with Frank to perform the song but had pulled out at the last minute. Frank was clearly sceptical about the reason given and does a rip roaring version of the song with heavy emphasis on the fieryness of rings.

The core problem is defining exactly what "country music" is - it means so many different things to different people. A lot of people who profess to hating country music may only have heard parody songs or a few country songs which crossed over into the pop charts and tend to be watered down and/or repeated ad nauseum.

Okay, the genre works with a limited pallette of themes and instrumentation, but why should that be necessarilly a bad thing? Artistic simplicity is often a virtue.

Like any interest, musical or otherwise it pays to invest a little time and effort in exploring the history and reference points of a subject.

Like many foods, musical taste can be acquired - but I would accept that some people will never like garlic, or brussel sprouts or curry - no matter how much someone else tries to convince them how nice they taste.
