Could coronavirus be Trump's downfall?

Yes, of course it does. Not remotely diversionary at all. Silly me.

More diversion!

US President Donald Trump and the Senate have agreed a massive economic relief package worth more than $1.8 trillion (£1.5tn).

The package includes money to bail out industries that have been affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Republican Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell described it as a "wartime level of investment" in the economy.

$1.8 trillion! Wow.

$1.8 trillion! Wow.
It's really no different in scale from the packages of many other countries. It just gets a big headline cos it's announced as one central pile of money.

As for Trump's motivation, he appears to have taken a punt early on that he's right that it's an overreaction. Johnson did that too, but has now about-faced cos he had no choice. Trump would also have had to about-face, but he's chosen instead to allow individual states to make the decisions instead of him. I don't see him coming out of this well. He made a big bet and the cards aren't coming up for him.

Shocking article
EVeryone laid off, even on a temp basis, loses access to healthcare via insurance (or can pay £35k from their own pocket to cover it)

Many will sadly lose their jobs over the coming weeks – with one estimate projecting as many as 30%

Earlier on the thread, when looking at how Trump & Fox News did a rather speedy and none too subtle about-face, I mentioned this:

There are signs that the shift is supported, or mandated, by Fox News executives. On Friday, Trish Regan’s show on Fox Business, which is owned by Fox News Media and echoes the conservative tone of the Fox News channel, was suspended after Regan offered a particularly strident avalanche of misinformation on air.

She has now been sacked:

Regan faced fierce criticism earlier this month when she described the coronavirus to her viewers as an "impeachment scam."

Regan claimed "many in the liberal media" were using the pandemic "in an attempt to demonize and destroy" Trump.
"This is impeachment all over again," Regan said at the time, claiming Trump's critics were using the pandemic to spark panic and destabilize the economy to harm his chances of being re-elected.

Just watched part of his latest press conference and he decided to share his thoughts about how weird it was that a new york hospital needed 10 times more masks than usual, and that journalists should look into it, and that maybe the masks were disappearing out of the back door.

Oh god now his plan for saving restaurants is to make them and entertainment a tax-deductible corporate expense again.

its great how many spare trillions there are now :)

There aren't really, at least one credit agency has downgraded UK, and US suspended the Basel accords (things brought in post 2008 to reduce banks holding bad debts), ECB is arguing with itself over what it will do.. the economic situation is as hairy as the medical one.

He repeated it again when asked a question about it by a reporter. He was going on about 30 times more masks than usual (he was comparing 10,000-20,000 masks used normally to 300,000 being needed now). "I'm not suggesting hoarding, I might be suggesting something worse than hoarding' type stuff. But then he says its not for him to find out, thats for others to do, he will just talk shit about it and demonstrate another area of his ineptitude.

Anyway when he finally got to the main point of the press conference, after endless booster shit, it was that they are extending their restrictions, that they originally sold as being for 15 days, till April 30th.

i'm not always being entirely serious, sorry.

I'm not going to waste my time explaining this aspect of Trumps modus operandi to you, except to say that he has done exactly the same thing with other issues. Its a deflection away from their failure to provide these things in sufficient quantities. Whether there is zero or a small amount of truth to some of his claims is not the point (and certainly doesnt matter to him), he distorts this shit and deliberately plants shitty seeds.

In the very same press conference they were touting the fact they are going to allow people to self-test via nasal swab, because the current procedure requires new PPE for every new person being tested. That alone explains a fair chunk of the increased PPE demand, and thats just one use of it, never mind all the people working in the hospital in other areas that require more PPE during a pandemic.

So Guv Cuomo HAD raised the issue prior to Trump and the media HAD reported it. Congrats to them on doing their jobs. Perhaps the President could stop looking for excuses as to why he can't do his and come up with some kit. That thieves themselves are scum goes without saying

I tried to watch his briefing last night, I mean I really tried but he rambles on and fucking on, Most drunken alcoholics have a more coherent train of thought than he does.
In the end I just gave up and googled the summary today to skim over the key points and its just garbage he clearly makes half of it up as he goes along.
At one point he came out and said I will stop funding the WHO (basically because they didn't agree with him) and then moments later he was flat out denying he said that.
And WTF does putting a 'very powerful hold on the funds' mean? Does the director of the WHO have to wrestle the Rock for any money they get?
