Could coronavirus be Trump's downfall?

"I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. Every one of these doctors said, 'How do you know so much about this? ' Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president."

Trump in full-on delusional mode.

For weeks, many have marveled at Trump's willingness to ignore, reject, and contradict assessments from experts on the coronavirus outbreak, but these comments help make clear why the president is comfortable doing so: he's convinced himself that he's an expert.

Of course, he has claimed to be an expert in just about everything, the different this time is that people are dying, and if the numbers end-up being in the thousands, it should be a wake-up call to enough people to tip the scales & see him out of the White House.

I hear that the Wikipedia page on the Dunning Kruger effect has been replaced with a .gif of Trump, rotating gently :hmm:

‘Lowly driver’? Bit sneery, yes?
no
here's the previous occasion i used the word:
i've just spent half an hour looking for my employer's emergency plan.

it's not on the website as the website's undergoing improvement (!). the woman to contact is on leave. her nominated deputy is on leave. his nominated deputy is at least in: although whether she'll supply to a lowly librarian remains to be seen.
i am strangely not in the habit of sneering at myself.

First containment zone being set-up in the US.

A 1-mile containment zone in New Rochelle, a town just outside of New York City, will be set up in hopes to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

Officials say they hope this "dramatic action" will curb what appears to be one of the largest clusters of virus infection in the country.

"New Rochelle is a particular problem," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference Tuesday. "The numbers continue to go up, the numbers are going up unabated and we do need a special public health strategy for New Rochelle."

Good to know 'Trump the Expert' has everything under control.

So, both Bernie Sanders & Joe Biden have cancelled rallies in accordance with advice from public health officials, but not Trump.

Here's one for Marty1

Well, I’m not interested in taking credit for predicting this way before it made its way into the press but yes, after the Russia collusion hoax, impeachment hoax, now the US left are unfortunately politicising the coronavirus against Trump at a time when this should be a bipartisan issue.

The reason you get so much shit is because you're fundamentally dishonest. This is the third time I've pointed out that Trump fired the whole pandemic response team. Of course he's being criticized for it. You want to respond this time?

For a start, Snopes is about as far away from the arbiter of truth as you can get, however a stopped clock is indeed correct twice a day.

Regardless of Trumps alleged complicity in unpreparedness for this virus, I don’t see any other country doing any better in managing this outbreak, least not China that housed a bio hazard research lab only a short distance away from where this virus is thought to have originated from.

So that's a no then.

You're not just being criticized because you have far-right opinions. You're being criticized because you avoid honest discussions. You're dishonest.

I was being a lttle ironic Maty , this Fox news is just junk tbh. Trump is 'managing' the eipdemic just the same as most other states ie on the reliance of health experts. The key issue for the States however is the capacity not of their health service but of the capacity of the working man or woman to be able to pay for the health service. That in itself is should be the bipartisan issue at a time of crisis.

"lol" indeed. He's hit the nail on the head.

Your unwillingness to engage honestly with pretty much any discussion makes your flippant responses - like "lol" - look like you don't actually have any answers. You're here to smear shit, and you have no interest in backing it up with anything. Which makes you start to look like you're only here to troll. That's usually a pretty good way to end up being flung out on your ear.

Not at all, the individual I was responding to has an axe to grind as he can’t accept I called the attack on Trump before it was in the media - I’ve replied/engaged to him politely but he still grinds his axe - my ‘lol’ was more in resignation of his continued stupidity tbh - he’s now on ignore so I don’t have to endure any further of his/her snopes crap and repetition.

:D goodoh

Trump has just given an impromptu press briefing at the White House with the message of ‘stay calm’....

He also claims he hasn’t been tested for the virus - surely as president he’d be getting tested daily?

He’s also going ahead with stadium packed rallies - one of his most recent ones had more people outside (25k) than inside, watching on a giant jumbotron - and Trump says he will still continue shaking hands...

Who the fuck is advising him? Hillary Clinton?

The whole things a scam. i.e Liberal authoritarinism/ reactionary authoritarianism. No one needs the daily express.

No I'm talking about bank bailouts. You know the ones that fuck us, and then fuck us for generations to keep them rich rich, and then fuck us again? that's the left's fault is it, Toryboy?

Some optimism from this writer, who notes that unlike many other scandals, this is something that has "a tangible impact on the lives of Americans."

For all the apparent durability of Trump’s personality cult, it is worth recalling that George W. Bush was once a figure of nearly equal stature on the right. He was the swaggering, flight-suit-wearing alpha male who had conquered Afghanistan and Iraq. The conservative media slathered over him in almost erotic terms. When things went south for Bush, after his failed attempt to privatize Social Security was followed by Hurricane Katrina and the unraveling of the Iraq occupation, they went south very fast.

But he also notes that while Trump definitely resembles the mayor in Jaws, "blithely ignoring reports of a gigantic shark because he didn’t want to hurt the tourism season," that mayor still had his job in Jaws 2.

But his claim about Bush is simply incorrect - approval rating (from 538)

That's not things going south very fast that's a pretty steady decline. followed by a sharp boost followed by another pretty steady decline, a minor boost around his relation and then the continuation of the steady decline. (EDIT: In contrast one of the remarkable things about Trump's ratings as opposed to previous presidents is how constant they've been).

That piece, like the BBC piece, like the Guardian piece all rest on the same patronising liberal delusions that they've repeated since Trump's run for president, the same crap thrown again and again. That their politics, their statecraft (to use a terrible cited above) is the right and proper mode of politics and that sooner or later those that have been hoodwinked by populism will see their "delusion" exposed, return to fold and behave themselves.

"These people didn't [don't] know what they were voting for" - time and time again this is their refrain. Apart from most did have at lest some idea what they were voting for, that's why the LP just lost a shit load of seats, that's why the RN is now one of the two main parties of France, why the League may become the next government in Italy, why AfD will be a serious force (perhaps even the main opposition) in the next Budenstag.

Trump may lose the election (I'd actually be quite surprised if he didn't lose the popular vote) but the nonsense posted in the pieces above show that liberals still have no fucking clue about the drivers of populism.

By choosing Joe "Let's Make Everything Just Like It Was During the Wonderful Obama Years" Biden over Bernie Sanders, the Democrats have lost the chance to fight populism with populism, but their chances of winning in November still might be getting better with every mistruth about the coronavirus outbreak that comes out of Trump's mouth - in 2018, part of how they won back the House was by focusing district to district on issues that directly affected voters, especially health care - if the outbreak in the US stays on its current trajectory, they're likely to find an even more receptive audience this time around.
