. Now, which one do I want to use in the pissing rain or mud?
Well you clearly want the hydraulic one. Thats me told.

A saddle, seat post, tyres, possibly cables (may/should come with groupset components if you're buying new) + cable caps

Oh, and mrs quoad, that is a gorgeous looking frame. Any chance you can do the same thing as you did with your hybrid: kit it all up, decide you don't really want it, then flog it (this time to me, at a huge discount...there's a good chap!)

mrs q, i seem to remember sigmund fraud posting about an ambrosio hubset that are rip offs of record hubs at a fraction of the price, could be an excellent start to some handbuilt wheels that would help keep the price down and performance up.
add a centaur groupset with carbon cranks and you could finish the beast off for a little under a grand.

Ooo.
Ooo?
p.s. Centaur? Athena, no?![]()

Yes, on bad conditions on a trail I would like the one with better modulation and overall stopping power. I'm glad to have cleared that up for you.
Yep - Ambrosio Zenith hubs:-

Add some Ambrosio Excellight rims (lightest tubed 700c rim you can buy) and Sapim lazer spokes and get them built by this fella:-
Harry Rowland
You can easily swap out the cassette body for Shimano should you decide to go the wrong way later. I reckon he could build you the whole kit above for about £250 - I have two sets of these and they're bomb proof, light and repairable. The zenith hubs are amazing.
ps budget for a cassette lockring - bit of a PITA the hubs don't come with one but there you go - £12 extra.
TY, both!whatever they call it these days
those wheels look the nuts, if you want to go the extra mile check out sapim cxray spokes![]()

I really am bored of hijacking mrs q's thread any further. Suffice to say that you feel modern high spec mtb's are overly complex devices which people like me buy because we're stupid, while I think you're talking out of your hole. Seem fair? If you want a long running thread on why full suss is better than hardtail, or disks better than rim, or hydraulic better than mechanical, why not start a thread for that? I will happily argue the toss till the rest of the board has us both barred for being dull bastards, but I'm not going to do it in a thread celebrating someone else's new project.
at the lot of youse

How many h do I want? NB: I'm not small. So I reckon 'quite a lot'?

iii) I understand brazing + carbon fibre doesn't really work. How would one identify if one needed a 32mm or 35mm clamp? Or would that become obvious, like?2009 Chorus D-Skeleton brake calipers (2006-2008 model also available. The 2007-2008 model has hidden pivot bolts and ball bearing actuation like Record and Super Record)

£250 on the button, fwiwYep - Ambrosio Zenith hubs:-

Campy question:
i) Colnago = Italian threaded?
ii) Erm. What brakes? Or what does this mean? Is it good?![]()

iv) I have big legs. So 175mm cranks?
v) would getting an 11-25 (as opposed to 11-23) cassette add much, given there's likely to be a daft-big gap (14t or summat) between the outer and inner ring? Wouldn't that give all the useful gears, like?

TY!fine choice

i) not sure - nominally yes - Boycey? Phone a 'Nago dealer?
ii)yes - All campag brakes from Veloce up are great stoppers, Chorus are even better.
iii)do you mean braze on front clamp? They'll be a slot on the seattube. If not you gotta use band on - not sure of diameter (measure it?)
iv)not about big legs, its about how tall you are and therefore how much leverage you can muster and how much advantage longer cranks will give you. I'm 6'2" and use 175mm.
v)depends - you have no hills and seem like a speed merchant, why not go for a straight through 11-21? If you're worried buy a cheaper cassette (eg Veloce, Ambrosio and BBB also do pattern cassettes). Do you need a 25 sprocket in Cambs?
I'm hoping it's arrived today. I should've said
I hope. WITH 175mm cranks, and 11-23 (IIRC) cassette. 21 wasn't offered
