COTS Drain Photography

it all depends on what your priorities are - is photography an aside to UE?

Yup, that is what I mean about the recording style of it. Much of the stuff I have seen seems to be done for primarily the love of exploring and the photography is a secondary thing - to document it as a memory for themselves. I can't speak for Guirellaphoto, but I reckon he's also into photography - he's bought some gels and is fiddling around with different settings.

Palo999 does UE ting, but I get the impression he's really there for the chance to take great photos primarily, and the exploration is a secondary thing.

Then again. It is probably just me as most portraiture doesn't really do much for me either, nor does nature photography - but street photography, photojournalism, and some abstract / conceptual stuff certainly does.

Course, it all depends on what your priorities are - is photography an aside to UE, or do you go to these places more to take pictures than anything else?

True. Bresson said that it was life that interested him more than photography so perhaps this is the op lives by...

Wicked photos Gureilla ;)

dayglo = important actually as with it on no one takes any notice of what you are doing and you can get away with lifting a manhole cover and decending in one of the busiest parts of Brighton at 11pm.

I was showing you these as I believe them to be interesting to some people or am i the only person who is interested in seeing what the blinkered people of todays society dont realise is there benieth and around them??

I am into my photography and take many other photos and am in the process of building a full web site of all my photography so I will let you know when it is online.

The exploration and photography are both important to me. The exploration is what got me into photography as I had never picked a camera up a year ago I now have sold work and had it published which has been hard work as i have had no teaching apart from the internet and books. As for wishing to improve look at my web site and work from the bottom up I think I have improved and I am still learning and have just started to learn film 35mm and darkroom, and am starting to do studio work.

dangers down there:

- Failing of Torch
- Bad air
- being swept down a river of shit and tampons
- falling down the big hole
- getting stuck down there
- falling and injuring yourself
- flash flood
- someone blockading the exit
etc....

This is not for the light hearted.

My point is essentially this - confidence is both good and bad.

It's good for looking forward - getting you to go to places, getting you to get your camera out once you're there, getting you to experiment, getting you to get the best results with what you have, getting you to get that shot when it could easily be a waste of time, getting you to be sure it's all worth pursuing.

It's not so good when you're looking back - can I do better? Is this a strong enough set? Is this work on this shot good enough, or should I try harder? Go further? Am I doing the right thing? Can I learn from what I did badly/well?

I reckon, and as I keep saying it's purely something I perceive in your posts - you should think more about the latter. Both explicitly and implicitly get hints, advice, inspiration and take it on board. You'll go much further. Just my tuppence!

i enjoy looking at this type of stuff. mainly cos i'm quite keen on exploring places i shouldn't myself.

i would say though that this type of photography can get a little samey, no matter how interesting the subject. there's only so many pictures of hi-vis clad figures in tunnels you can tolerate :) .

personally i like to see unusual shots that make you think a bit. maybe focusing on the aesthetic nature of the subject in a more abstract way, rather than as a recording device.

i would also say that editing is very important. i've seen many sets of UE photos (not neccessarily yours) where the photographer has presented pretty much every shot taken without a thought to the effect the images have as a set. presenting 20 or 30 similar shots, when 5 well chosen images could have a stronger effect.

i think this holds true with a lot of different types of photography. particularly evident on places like flickr, where people just upload all their shots without any editing.
