brown sauce/bbq sauce - brown, no. bbq - bin
Mayo - yes
leeks - no! Will stink out fridge, and makes them "weep"
onions - see leeks
potato - don'tbe silly
bread - only in Italy, or Africa or something
 
It says on jars of jam and even pickles that they should be put in the fridge once opened. However pickling and making jam is a way of preserving fruit and vegetables so that they keep. It has a history of thousands of years going back to when the world was all in sepia and beyond. Refrigerators are a really modern invention and in the UK were not found in ordinary homes until the 1950s. Our grandparents didn't need put jam and pickles in a fridge.
 
To stop sugar loving mould growing all over it.

I've got a part used 5 year+ old jar of jam in my cupboard. There's no mould on it as there's too much sugar in jam. :p

If any mould does form you just scrape the top bit off and chuck it away. The rest is fine. :)

If you eat jam that has had mould on it you are likely to get the taste of alcohol which ruins the jam.

I only started putting my jam in the fridge after I got fed up with finding it mouldy.

Maybe I've got some aggressive mould in my house - I had a jar of pickled lemons in the fridge that developed a huge growth of mould floating on the pickling liquid. Cold acidic liquid doesn't seem an ideal environment for mould but it seemed to be thriving.

I've got no qualms about scraping mould off stuff, just prefer to be able to jam up my toast in the morning without the extra hassle.

Lemons (particularly half-lemons) No
Mushrooms-Yep
Butter-Nope

Fresh coffee is another must put in the fridge, makes a big difference.
 
My father in law insists on putting absolutely everything in the fridge. The man will put peanut butter there. His reasoning is that he doesn’t need to keep the air in the fridge cool.

actually he's right. the more full your fridge is the less energy it uses :)
