Controlled parking

Only if there is one car per household. I'd guess that in a lot of Lambeth it's lower than that.

Where I live I reckon it's more like one for every two households - though my street is about 2/3 council- so that probably has an impact.

The trend in my street is for one-time family homes to be converted into two or three flats - putting loads of extra pressure on the space, not only for cars, but wheelie bins and so on.

With out a reasonably high price for permits, things would be even worse and, as another has said above, it must surely be a matter of old fashioned supply and demand that determines the price.

Blimey Lambeth is crap. In Camden you can renew your permit online, over the phone or in loads of 'environment offices' (really parking offices but they can't call them that because it's not green). AND we have different prices according to CO2 emissions. Don't Lambeth do that at least? That's crap

I pay 80 quid a year and live about 2 mins walk from the tube

They already make a profit out of me on council tax because I don't use many of the services it apparently goes for, so why can't they use that instead?

Can't believe this gem from post #4 hasn't been mentioned.

Hang on, maybe he has a point. People who go to private schools should get a tax rebate for not using state education. And anyone not in hospital should get a daily bonus for not being there. It's all so unfair.

Have you seen the price of fire engines lately? Why oh why oh why should we pay towards them if we're responsible people who don't start chip-pan fires? We never eat chips. My girlfriend's allergic to them.

Sometimes I have my own little dish of chips when she's away.

Of course, they're oven chips. Only reckless inconsiderate immigrants have chip pans.

I'm not sure that the price of a permit determines whether you decide to have a car or not.

Yes we have an emissions based system - permits range from £30 for the lowest emitting cards up to £200 for the worst.

The closest we get to avoiding queues in Lambeth is being able to send the application from (with photocopies of teh documents) by post. One day we will be able to do it online...

I think they use the system of having to show your paper documents to try and make sure that everyone has got road tax, insurance and is the registered owner of the vehicle etc

They told hendo that he'd eventually be able to do it online. That was two years ago and counting....
