Conscious Hip Hop

check out immortal technique, definitely mos def, talib kwali, paris, early common stuff, the roots, dead prez, some typical cats, qwel, early tupac, sage francis, etc

Public Enemy, Disposable Heroes, Dead Prez, Mos Def and almost anything on Rawkus record label (try 'Hip Hop for Respect' which brings together all of Rawkus's talent on one e.p.). People have mentioned anticon stuff which is good but I'm not sure if it's either hip hop or conscious, but its not all about guns and bitches. Buck 65 is good for Dylanesque hick hop about growing up in the sticks and how no-one dresses smartly anymore.

E2A: New Kingdom. Glamorous Hooligan.

It's like Chuck D said rap music started as the Black CNN,So how did we end up with the Fantasy Channel instead ?
I kind of prefer the fantasy element myself. The characatures of bling do fascinate me more to be honest and they can hold certain witicisms about their various strengths. To paraphrase Mr D, rock music started out as raucous party music in the 50s, so how did we end up with James Blunt and Coldplay?

"hip-hop" is apparently now the biggest selling genre of music in the world but sadly it's "stars" are now just talentless corporate whores....jay z, 50 cent, etc. people like public enemy and ice t put hip-hop on the map and they actually had something to say - which is what hip-hop is all about. i think most 'real' hip hop could probably be described as 'conscious' in some way

to add to the list:

braintax
ozomatli (not strictly hip-hop)
mark b & blade
rodney p

i'd even include people like ice t as "conscious hip-hop"

Jay-Z is definitely not talentless. He's pretty much regarded as the master of the genre by many in the field and his use of producers from Timbaland to Just Blaze to Rick Rubin shows a definite dexterity in his style. I think you just picked a random successful name out of a hat there for your diatribe.

Just discovered Emcee Lynx, an anarchist hip hop artist who has 2 albums and an EP available on his site as free downloads (plus links to a load of other interesting stuff)... only listened to the "Black Dog" EP as yet, so can't vouch for the quality of the rest, but liking what i'm hearing so far (altho the meshing of the beats with the vocal could poss do with a little work)...

Immortal Technique is always one for politically charged stuff. His beats are pretty toss most of the time, but its his message that's important so you can kinda let it slide.

A lot of french stuff is extremely political, but if you're not a french speaker then its a bit pointless :D

 :D

Stavros, you never fail to amuse me, although I kind of admire your dogged admiration of all the platinum selling superstars, at least its consistent.

I've got a great mp3 of Jay-Z getting totally outclassed by a mercurial Big L on an old live freestyle, although actually Jay-Z's rhyming is a lot better than it is today.

He's a capable MC, but "master of the genre" he ain't. Most of his rhymes are ghostwritten from what I've heard, although he did come up with the classic "like short sleeves I bear arms" so I'll give him that one.

Personally, I can't stand Jay-Z as an MC. Decent producer, from time to time, but not really my type of hip hop, tbh.

Master of chart hits with schoolkid choirs, perhaps...

Whilst I appreciate your faux-respect, I do take major issue with the use of the word "all" in that sentence. I don't like 50 Cent, I'm not wild about Eminem, and Kanye West and Mike Skinner are starting to piss me off so that rules out the four or so biggest MCs in the British chart. This also extends beyond hip hop to dance (I love the Jaxx and Daft Punk but can take or leave the Chems), indie (SFA yes, Coldplay fuck-no), and pop (Girls Aloud vs Westlife....... nuff said). So I do have standards. :p
