conger eel - delicious eating

I saw two relatively little 'uns in the aquarium on the Cobb in Lyme this autumn.

They do strange things with Congers in Lyme!

This is the local sport of Conger-Cuddling:

Conger Eel cuddling.
Its like a game of table skittles, the conger eel replaces the ball and the team stood on blocks of wood replace the skittles. This team is the local fire brigade, most organisations in the resort put a team forward.

I don't reckon you could fit one much over, say 40lb in a lobster pot.

A big conger can get itself into a surprisingly small space. They seem fond of the cracks in pier blocks.breakwaters & I've seen several hauled-out by surprised fishers. Usually the first reaction on seeing that head come into view is to cut the line.

Nasty things & in this area, I can't think of ever hearing of anyone wanting to eat them.
