First off, I am aware no one cares about this. It's just a bit of fun right?
For two weeks in June (14th-28th I believe) South Africa, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Egypt, Iraq, the USA and New Zealand will compete for this innocuous trophy.
Who will win? Who cares?

Anyway. As someone with a lot of time on their hands and a slightly worrying ability to watch any form of football no matter how poor quality or short in duration I was glad to see that the BBC will be showing every match (I think). Buuuuut only on BBC3 and the *frigging* RED button.

Being one of the few people not to have access to BBC 3 I was hoping they would show it online on their website but it seems they aren't. Maybe they will change their minds but at the moment there's no mention of it. What are the odds of them putting it on iPlayer?

.. and its a bit of a long shot but i guess this could become the general discussion thread for the tourny. Who knows - this could be the year the confederations cup becomes a la mode....

Got to be a laugh. Is it in South Africa?

Only thing is it does kinda represent overkill... RIP Marc Vivian Foe who died while at the tournament a few years back (2001 I think)

Oh, and spain are going to massacre anyone else on that list. They're fucking fantastic at the moment.

(Which means they will peak before the WC and not actually win it)

Yeah I think they're hosting it in the four stadia that are actually ready!

Only Brazil and NZ have announced their squads so far. Brazil seems reasonable... can't say i've heard of (m)any of the NZ players!

Harmless fun though. I mean what better to fill the gap between the two football seasons than more football?? I rest my case.

Another memorable moment from a pre-World Cup warm up tournament would be Roberto Carlos' banana free-kick against France. Blinder!

England won that compo. Everyone remembers 66 but not 97. Ingrates.

I saw Brazil v NZ just before the 2006 world cup IIRC. NZ looked like a Championship level side.

Yeah, and they'll remember 2010 when we win it :)

I'd like reports on the climate in particular. I keep thinking that there's never going to be a tournament again where the weather suits English players so well. Usually the hot weather seems to do us in.

yeah - that's what I'm thinking. Well suited to the English players.

Most places are fucking hot in the summer, and I do think that's one reason (amongst others) for England's failure to win a proper trophy since 66...

i'll undoudtedly watch it. Its football, and brazil, italy and spain are always good to watch.

I got told about foe's death at glastonbury. Nosos laughed as he told me:(

I was so close to hitting him, luckily i was too stoned/tired to work out how.

what a twat:mad:

Championship seems a bit generous judging by the teams that their players play for. Not that i'm an expert on the Aussie and NZ leagues but I would say the Championship is higher quality. They have one guy from Kilmarnock, one from Celtic and another from West Brom. Apart from that not much of note. Who knows though. Might surprise us...
