there's a lot of science behind pasta shapes - the shape should complement the nature of the sauce being used, something we Brits neglect terribly..

So what sauce should you have with bows then?

Do you mean cannelloni?

No, not cannelloni, I know what cannelloni is thank you.

It is penne, it says penne on the box, it's the same shape as penne (i.e. a tube with the ends cut diagonally), just bigger than what you normally get. Therefore I think it's pretty safe to say that it's not canneloni.

Fair enough. I was just trying to imagine penne of that width unless my head is making them out to be wider than an inch sounds. Sounds like they could be quite useful for tomato sauce recipes.

Isn't rigatoni generally a larger version of penne, albeit a bit more curved?

I can imagine it would be ace for a bolognese type sauce, or something with lots of mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes
