Computer Monitor thats also a TV

Good morning *waves*

I wondered if any of you clever people could help me?

I would like to replace my now quite old LCD monitor with a nice new shiney one, but as the room that has the computer is also the room I do alot of my sugarcraft in I would also like a TV. Now the room isn't big enough for both and I wondered if any of you could point me in the right direction for a monitor that has a built in TV card/tuner/thing?

Bees assures me they are out there, but I haven't a clue where to start looking tbh. I'd prefer it if the PC didn't have to be on to be able to watch tele :)

Thanks

:) x :)

No I've done the googling, I know there are things like what I want, but I wondered if people could recommend something, to avoid ones with x feature etc :)

Wasn't there a PC world add about something like this?

I have reached the end of my technical ability on this problem. Hope it has helped.

:D thats as far as I've got. I know they're out there :D but thats about it :D

You can just get a normal LED/whatever TV, hook it up to a TV out line (s video? something like that) from your PC and do it that way can't you? i.e. have a TV that is also a computer monitor, rather than the other way round. Or did I just make that up

i think most modern tvs will work as a monitor, i bought a 15 inch flat screen from woolies for about £100 a year or so ago, it needed a cable (which some techie type has already posted about)

If it's a TV first, monitor second, it'll be a crappy monitor - in most cases.

ah right, I'd rather have a good monitor tbh as thats our main PC :)

*back to original hunting*

look for a monitor that supports hdmi.

you will also need a TV card.

you can get a largish decent monitor for a couple of hundred quid (22")

well, thats what I'd like, if it was a £100 difference I'll get a card for the PC :D

That'd work just fine - just as long as the monitor has one of the yellow video in sockets (you might find one with scart, or more likely S-video, which would need an adapter, unless your freeview has s-video as well)

Yep you can use a TV as a monitor or a monitor as a TV. But there is a difference, big difference.

LCD TVs are generally bigger than monitors, with large pixels and low resolutions. This is why a 26" LCD TV is so much cheaper than a 24" LCD monitor. Unless you're willing to spend a small fortune on the screen you're only going to be able to get a 720p TV screen, with a resolution of around 1280x720. That's useable but you'll have to sit quite a way away from the screen to use it for computery stuff, even then you're going to have limited display space.

If you use a monitor as a TV then it's the opposite problem, the screens are very high resolution (24" LCD monitor = 2560x1080 or 1080P roughly) then you're going to be limited to a mere 24" screen budget wise. Also the TV signal is 16:9 and the LCD monitors are all 16:10, so you might get some stretching of the TV signal or you might get banding (black bands top and bottom).

the room is only about 3m square, budget is something tbh I don't know, cos I haven't a clue what the options are! and what price range we're talking about. I want to replace our curent LCD monitor anyway, so a couple of hundred? I honestly don't know :o

seating from monitor probably around 2m tops

I think we are in the same boat. I want something like this when I move into my new house. My computer has blown up and I need a new TV. Bingo. I await the outcome of this thread.

Maybe, that one only has DVI-D (aka DVI, or the current computer visual input thingy) and D-Sub. I don't know if your freeview box has D sub, hell, i'm not quite sure what it is :D

There are more expensive ones, like the 2407 from Dell that have every possible input source under the sun, but you end up paying a bit more for them, the dell is £445 ish, although there's probably something inbetween if we look.

Or you could buy a new freeview box, they're cheaper than going for a 2407.
