Company's obligations on advertising a promotion

but in a lot of workplaces there's only one union about. no idea about where he works but I know that if I get brassed off with Amicus then there's nowhere else for me to go

i haven't been in the past because the night shift union rep is such an arse, but i have a feeling i will be soon...

Just noticed this - they'll be unlikely to represent you in sufficient time to progress your issue. And anyway ... y'know, joining a TU isn't about a reactive need for help - it's about the long term and solidarity and stuff

just a quick one, is there any way that i can use this sent e-mail in a grievance i have with the company? technically, i do have acces to this e-mail account, because i need to be aware of any urgent e-mails that are received overnight (ie refigeration breakdowns etc) however, i doubt i could make a valid claim for going through some of the other folders...

If there is one (or more) TU that is recognised, tis best to join one of those because of their collective bargaining power.

If you really don't like, or get brassed off with, the recognised TU; you can still join a different one. The union support in that alternative situation becomes more personal (e.g. help at disciplinary/grievance hearings rather than the benefits of collective agreements and national wage bargaining etc) but still valuable. Plus you can then actively seek to recruit for that union until they are in a position to seek recognition in their own right. If you want to and believe in TU activism.

of course I can join another one but I doubt it'd get me anywhere. besides, unions tend not to like that sort of thing themselves I understand.

Imo - yes. You could either say that you accessed it validly in the course of your duties (just came across it through housekeeping tidy ups etc) OR you could make a data subject access request specifying a copy of that email (the long winded way round but it works). They'd probably be sufficiently embarrassed that they wouldn't make too much of a song and dance about that - at a guess.

You do have a hard copy, yes?

Where do you want to get to? If you just want an insurance policy in case you need personal representation at any point - then just join a TU more to your liking. If you want to get involved in TU activism and make a difference, you can do that within Amicus. It's the rank and file that decide at the end of the day - you'd need to garner support there. Who cares what the topdogs at any union like or dislike? The further up the hierarchy - the more potential for bureaucracy and power struggles. The rank and file are who really count - only they can make a collective difference.
