comic relief

i hate comic relief, it's the one time in the year that people grab their credit cards indiscriminately and give all their money away. j ross and terry wogan is like give us your money even tho we just made loads of people in the uk redundant.

Eh ? Terry Wogan & Ross made people redundant ?

And surely it's an individual choice to give to charity innit ?

e2q: People are indiscriminately using their credit cards all year round - that's why there's so much debt... I doubt if the use of credit cards on comic relief night ads much to the burden compared to a whole years card use for most folks

oh no the

royal family sketch

i hate the royal family sketch, did they bring on loads of it people?

ahhhhhh

and then did they bring on a boy/girl band

and did one of these bands write a song for comic relief?

i hate comic relief

it's so awful

this is an interesting thing for me as my views have come around to compare to those against which i used to strenuously argue in times past....

whilst objectively giving money in charity telethons is a good thing (certain people benefit) the way that it's done (emotional manipulation) is really shit. of course it's right to alert people to the fact that the way they live (in relative prosperity in the west) has consequences for others in the developing world the whole sordid spectacle of comic relief etc is just an exercise in expunging guilt. people think "ooh i've donated my 10 pounds i don't have to worry about x,y,z anymore...."

and its just another outlet for shitty celebrity culture...look who comes crawling out of the woodwork each year, i mean sure you get 'big names' doing stuff, but it certainly doesn't hurt their record sales/ tv viewing figures etc etc

i guess the question is: is making one persons life a bit better worth carrying on a farcical system that absolves people of guilt and ultimately doesn't change anything....

i guess i think that charity is a good thing ( i mean it obviously helps people) but i fucking despise all these celebritywankfests...they just distract from the real reasons why people need charity in the first place...

and bit confused at the personal abuse earlier on in the thread

Sorry to be the raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens rep, but:

1. No worse than a normal Friday night on TV. Don't like it, switch over.
2. Some of it was mildly entertaining.
3. In the middle of a credit crunch, fifty-odd MILLION QUID was donated for good causes.
4. We all got to feel a little bit good about ourselves, and some of us, who never think of anyone else ever, thought about others less fortunate for a minute.
5. I found the Kilimanjaro Nine programme quite inspiring, actually. That climb is no joke, and the fat unhealthy bloke fared the best.
7. David Tennant. In a David Byrne suit.

I know it gives us here in the west the opportunity to feel we're helping, rather than dwell on our part in causing the problems in the first place, but we can't turn back the clock, and we can't change the past. Hopefully a higher awareness of the real problems faced might change our strategies and policies for the future. CR does have the benefit of making it a lot harder for all of us to pretend it isn't happening.

So I just listened to feedback. I wasn't alone in thinking replacing the continuity announcers was one step too far.
