Combating the BNP in local elections.

How to stop the BNP.

Find enough evidence to support the claim that immigration doesn't hurt people and show people that everyone gets the same amount of state maoney spent on them on average per head and that ethinicity doesn't make life easier whe getting say housing...maybe by actually addressing the issues that teh BNP are standing on and showing them up to be bollocks?

Larry, I was having a laugh. There's too many po faced lefties and anarchos around who take themselves too seriously, I try to entertain myself at least as a famous situationist said. 'If I can't have a laugh I'm not coming to your revolution' didn't Emma Goldman say? OK - I've paraphrased it and changed it slightly...

You are quite right that the victimisation you have gone through is serious, and I do not know how I would have reacted. I have been harrassed by filth and journos though...

It was about dancing ;)

Emma Goldman said:
At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha, a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt the Cause.

Anyone who thinks students deserve their own "ism" is as out of touch with reality as anyone who thinks the BNP are a credible political party. BTW I have a degree.

Here are specifics of what i have so far.....
Welsh Assembly 24 (up from 1)
Scottish Parliament 24 (up form 1)
Lincoln 12
Leicestershire 28 (up from 6)
Gateshead 17 (up from 6)
Harrogate 13 (up from 1)
Salford 6 (up from 1)
Tameside 9 (up from 5)
Bognor 6
Carlisle 6
Winsford 6

As you can see- these are just a handful of authorities - and we havent even got anywhere, their areas of strength ( Burnley,West Yorkshire, West Midlands etc )

I think you will be looking at at least 450 Local Council wards fought- as well as Scottish and Welsh assemblies- the largest far right push at local elections ever

We need to differentiate between the specific targetting of seats at local level - many will be winnable, canvassed and thoroughly leafletted by the BNP - and the Scottish/Welsh elections.

The BNP is standing on the lists only and will be lucky if they can get one leaflet out via the Royal mail. In most of the Welsh seats, candidates have been parachuted in from other areas and, Swansea and the Rhyl area apart, they have no base of membership. So the elections here are a recruitment drive more than anything.

Concur that their Welsh and Scottish campaigns are mainly a recruitment drive- but as far as i can see- every BNP candidate for the Welsh assembly is based in Wales. As to not getting leaflets out- although there have been localised posties who wont deliver the leaflets- generally the post office get the mail out- there is always someone willing to do the overtime

The increase from 1 to 24 canddiates definately shows an element of growth for them there- they only stood one candidate in May 2003

Isn't it more to do with standing the amount to get a TV advert?

A more interesting question is what % of BNP candidates are plausible ones? Ones in winnable seats AND those that will not be found out to be muppets - so they at least stand a chance of getting re-elected...

correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you an SWP supporter?

Like you Larry I'm an ex-member. A supporter? Well, as far as revolutionary politics go there's not much choice about in that department.

I remember once speaking to some Green Anarchists in a tent they had pitched at the Glastonbury festival some years ago. I was very critical of one article I had read in Green Anarchist on the print workers. The representatives of Green Anarchist there - in between scoffing their quiche and drinking wine (never offered me any) - attacked the print workers because they were in the unfortunate position of working for the Sun. This made me rapidly come to the decision that this sort of politics was a million miles away from the working class politics I was interested in.

Nevertheless, I fully understand your position on Searchlight, considering the harassment you suffered.

point taken. As it happens, I am not (and have never been) a Green Anarchist (as opposed to writing for them & supporting them vs state harassment)

I see. :)

in terms of a political alternative to them at the ballot box, who is standing in May, and where? handful of SP candidates, a sole IWCA as far as i know- any news on Respect?

The best thing about the searchlight website is the BNP councillors page, showing how terrible they are. I know it's a serious issue and everything but it's hilarious..."he spoke only once, to ask what 'abstain' meant".

I do know we've got 7 in Brum: Moseley and KH, Sparkbrook, Springfield, Aston, Nechells, Lozells and East handsworth, and Bordesley green. All mainly inner city seats, but some bnp votes eg 400 in Nechells is a big chunk. Obviously there have been 'issues' in Brum Respect with regards to candidate and ward selection..

A Respect candiate is standing in Coventry for the first time since the Euros, also one in Leicester as well as the defected lab councillor in Loughborough. Don't know wards, soz. Elsewhere Maxine Bowler is having another crack in Sheffield, and Michael Lavallette plus others in Preston.

There'll be more, but that's what i know.

IWCA are fighting 1 ward in Thurrock where BNP stood previsouly

Socialist Party /Socialist Alternative are fighting wards in Lincoln, Stoke and Wakefield which BNP will fight (maybe also clash in Leicester)

As to respect - they will fight 2 Sunderland and 1 Kirkees ward defiantely against BNP

3 Respect in Sheffield - no idea if fascists standing
Burngreave - Maxine Bowler
Darnall - Mohammed Ahbabur Rahman, known as Miron
Central - Anwar Ali

3 Respect in Bradford- ditto
Manningham - Arshad Ali Khan (known as Ash)
City - Nadia MacGranthin
Little Horton - Farhan Ali

As to brum, one Socialist Labour in Sparkbrook. Not sure if BNP in Brum fighting all 40 wards this time - think they may duck the Inner city wards- where they onlypolled 1-5% in 2006

Its of course better to have some opposition rather than none against fash opposition, we need to wait until nominations close tomorrow but there look likely to be hundreds of wards with no progressive alterative of any hue.

Definate BNP nominations confirmed

Scottish Parliament 32 List Seats
North East of England 96 wards

Where are you getting this from? Are you trawling thru local authority websites?

Macullam said:
They have 3 but these seats are not up for election this year

Yep, none of them up for re-election this year. The SP is also standing in 4-5 other wards - so also up against the BNP there it seems

Latest .... full slate of 16 in Thurrock, and full slate of 40 in Birmingham
Swindon 2, Barrow 1, Bristol 3, Sheffield 7, Salford 5, York number unknown...

Have just heard BNP to fight 16 of the 18 Coventry wards!

WEll fuk a duk. I've been to Coventry once in 2005 - and wasn't too impressed with the place and the hotel was poor too, of course that's only personal, I don't think I could like anywhere down South:eek: :D

BUT i did like the clued up Asian people I met there - its a place SA can try and do well in by involving the Asian people like the ones I met... I am sure they will do well, they were conscious anti fascists that's for sure...

latest list

Ripon 3,Craven 1, Scarborough 4, Redditch 3, Solihull 5, Leicester 6, Oldham 4,Pendle 7, York 9, Bury 8,Liverpool 9, Sefton 5, Knowsley 2, St Helens 4, Allerdale 4, Carlisle 6,Suffolk 2, 33 Leeds, 23 Kirklees, 11 Basildon, 10 Burnley, 6 Rotherham, 3 East Herts, 1 Bedford 5 Northwest Leicestershire, Luton 2, Windsor 2, 2 West Berks, Melton Mowbray 1, Walsall 4, E Staffs 3, Charnwood 13, Plymouth 2, Torbay 5,Harrogate 16, Poole 2

so far, 507 BNP canddiates anounced. This is getting worse and worse.... ..

latest full regional list is East of England- 73 canddiates

Thurrock 16 Basildon 11 Southend-on-Sea 7 Epping Forest 5 Maldon 8 Rochford 1 Broxbourne 9 East Hertfordshire 3 Bishop's Stortford 4 Luton 2 Stevenage 1 Mid Bedfordshire 1 Huntingdonshire 1 Suffolk Coastal 1 Mid Suffolk 1 King's Lynn 1 West Norfolk 1

No BNP candidates standing in Southampton or Portsmouth!!
Mind Gary Bushells English Democrats are standing in Portsmouth. I think there are about 6 candidates. Apart from that we are nazi free.
Now I can sit at home during this council election. Brilliant.:p

There are 6 BNP standing in Ashfield, Notts, and one English Democrats and one UKIP. None in neighbouring Mansfield, where they have stood previously.

From their website:

"Over 650 candidates have already been confirmed at district, borough, parish and town council level."

Page posted 'Sedgefield 16' on that www.vote2007 site - That's interesting - Tony Blairs area, I am surprised they have managed to pull that off. Will investigate more and let you all know.

Cheers.
