The old Warsaw looked beautiful, like another Vienna. Why didn't they restore all the old buildings after the war?

    ViolentPanda Hardly getting over it.

The same set of reasons few buildings in Soviet satellites got restored - if you control the culture, you can more successfully control a people.

The city was still being restored right up to the 80s. Many parts of the Old Town and the Royal Route were meticulously reconstructed....thanks to the perseverence of Jan Zachwatowicz...

its a miracle as much has been restored as has been. Its verging on unbeleivable how old the old town looks. And of course most of the rebuild was done in a USSR-fashion with USSR money.

Some of the reconstruction wasnt finished til the 80s...see the palace...

Fair play to the architects and engineets who managed to construct the old town centre.

The rest is very Commie but....they probably didnt have enough dosh to pay for the entire city and they had millions of citizens to house..

Fair and actual information about Warsaw and what's happening there nowadays: Główna :) It's amazing how the city thrived from nothing in just few dacades. Unfortunately this travel guides can't show the spirit which is always alive in Warsaw
