Coffee bean shops

I am buying a coffee ginder on the way home from work today and I want to start using it. Does anyone know of some really good shops from which I can buy coffee beans in London?

Thanks x x

Unless it's somewhere where the beans have been freshly roasted, then you'll probably do just as good getting some beans from Sainsbury's :)

(*someone else might have some better advice)

There used to be a fabulous place on the Finchley Rd between Swiss Cottage and Fly Road tube stations - glorious smell of roasting coffee beans emitted.

Havent been there for a while though

There's a place in Soho that grinds lovely coffee. Is it on Old Compton st?
If it's the one I'm thinking of, that one's ace. Somewhere in Soho. They ask you what kind of coffee-maker you'll be using and grind it to the right granularity.

Algerian coffee stores on old compton street. I've got some really nice coffee from there.

Monmouth is also vgood, & the staff are dead friendly (& their cakes are deadly tempting too!)

Thanks for all the replies. my partner works in the west end so i can get him to go to old compton street and Covent garden. I liive in Deptford so i could pop to Greenwich and have a go there. I will keep you posted on what i think the best is! x

Just don't tell the snooty staff at the Algerian Coffee Store that they over-roast some of their beans and that some are not fresh. For some reason they seem to think they are beyond reproach.

not just me then! I've refrained from saying I think the Algerian is poor because I thought it was just personal experiences.

I've found their popular coffees are OK but once you get into more exotic beans then the quality varies markedly. One load of beans from the Congo were horribly burnt but they casually told me that that was how beans from the Congo are. Yeah buddy, like they torch the fucking plant before they harvest them.

My experiences have been occasional over the last decade or two, but each time I give them another opportunity to shine I end up disappointed. So I stick with Monmouth, which has an all round better attitude.
