cocteau twins

The Cocteau Twins sort of morphed into the The Sundays, didn't they? Not literally, metaphorically.

What happened to 4AD, their record label. Only the coolest stuff was allowed on there. Leeds' Pale Saints were the best, I thought, "Comforts of Madness", but I wonder how well art-indie holds up a decade and a half later...

I used to know Ian from the Pale Saints, they were pretty big in France when I was hanging out over there as a youth... nice geezer, lives in Balham now...

Had a lot of their records the first time 'round, but I've really been re-discovering them over the last year.

Some of their very early stuff was a bit too goth for my liking, and after Blue Bell Knoll their releases didn't really captivate me. But I've always loved Victorialand, Blue Bell Knoll, Treasure, and all their amazing singles and eps from '85/86. Just so beautiful. :)

The only thing that spoilt a lot of it for me was whenever the (808?) drum machine got overly-cavernous. I didn't really like it then, and it sounds just as clunky to me now. I'd love them so much more if it weren't for that.

It might be Ian who gave me an almight snub once - albeit I was a spotty 17 year old and not the sort of groupie he was probably after.

But they had an offshoot band, The Edsel Auctioneer, who I went to see at Hebden Bridge Working Men's Club - this would be about 1990 - and bumped into the main bloke from Pale Saints in the bogs - who then denied point blank repeatedly being in the Pale Saints, despite me having seen them in concert about a month before. Very embarassing.

If you ever see him around Balham, ask him what the classical music was the Pales Saints used to come on stage to - very cool atmospheric touch.

Haven't seen him for years, but a mate of mine keeps in touch with him, so I could ask him...

All those leeds bands used to call themselves, or NME called them, "the voice of the Harold", 'cos they all lived on/around Harold Street in Headingley...

That's kind of where I knew him from, he was a mate of the engineer who used to run the Hadawi Centre recording studio in Huddersfield and they all lived in Headingley.

Good times.

I remember the first time i heard them about 18 years ago and haven't stopped listening to them since. Amazing!

Although I don't like all their songs I do think they're great :)

Some of my faves are Sugar Hiccup, Pepper-Tree, Dear Heart, From the Flagstones...

My only regret is that Brian Eno didnt get a chance to produce them (they rejected his offer). I'd have loved to have seen Eno get his ambient mits on that wall of sound. Bet it would have been awesome.

Sugar Hiccup is my fave for sure :)

They are among the few 80's bands I can still listen to a lot. Treasure is my fave, but been listening to their later stuff like Heaven or Las Vegas and the Twinlights EP a lot recently.

I've got sugar hickup on my Mp3 player.

What was that song they did that went - 'da duba daa ^^ da daba da ^^ da duba da . da da da da'?

Or was that this mortal coil?

Still going, to the best of my knowledge, which reminds me there's a new Kristin Hersh album that I have to buy. :)

Definitely up there with EG as one of my favourite labels. They're one of those outfits that I'll take a chance on a band I've never heard of just because it looks interesting.

Oh, and the Cocteaus are fab.

I've got MP3s of the Cocteau's versions of "Frosty the Snowman" and "Winter Wonderland". Strange but lovely in their own way.

:o I still play the CT's:D
Love'em to bits.
Victorialand is prob my fav alb,
Cico Buff my fav single:cool:
Never seen them live though.

Great band. How anybody can say that they are miserableists is beyond me. I love Liz heard This Mortal Coil's version of Song to the Siren recently and it's beautiful. What's the chances of a reunioj? I know that they didn't all get on(who does?) was it Robin or Simon that was a pain?
