That article is mostly overblown bullshit, written by a british guy, in a british paper, for english readers, to help them convince themselves that Americans are worse than them in every way, even when it comes to sports hooliganism.

Sorry, it just ain't so.
Swells lives in Philadelphia actually. People here have gone to the trouble of providing evidence that your opinions are based on pig ignorant prejudiced toss, so if you want to dispute any particular details in the article, feel free to do so.

I stand by my comment that in the eyes of the world, the perception is that the english football fan is a violent lout.

I will admit that after this thread, I realize that the bad old days of the seventies etc, when whole sections of the crowd did get into giant brawls, are gone. It appears that law enforcement and govt responded to that problem, and the fixes have done some good.

I'm sure that in time, the perception of the english soccer fan as a drunken violent boor, will change as well.

The world's perception is based on how things used to be. The way things used to be, were so bad that your govt had to pass special laws to try to get it under control.

Maybe it's better now, but it's not like this idea was created out of thin air.

Not quite sure how you feel empowered to speak on behalf of the entire world when you're talking about the supposed global perception of all English football fans here.

Perhaps you're only accurately portraying the opinions of the really ignorant folks?

You know, the kind of people who swallow up sensationalist media bullshit whole and the regurgitate it as 'fact' without bothering to do even a basic bit of research first?

Unfortunately I don't think it will. Football holligan stories are great column fillers and the media are whores who care not about the subject they cover and its best interests. All they care about is selling papers and so they will carry on exagerating the situation until they discover no one is interested in it any more and it fails to help them sell papers. I can't see that happening any time soon though.

You might be right: maybe the perception will continue on as it is.:)

You might want to delude yourself into thinking that the perception isn't what it is [the said perception is confirmed in that Swells article, btw]; doesn't really matter to me.

Not if you're reading carefully.:)

But I'll agree, it was somewhat ambiguous.

But: 'fucking pranet'?

I still don't know what a pranet is.

I dunno, I think I made it up randomly.

It just pisses me off that Americans get all upset when we generalise about them based on a few shootings (e.g. that they're all gun-toting nutters) yet think it's fine for them to generalise us on the basis of a few hooligans... (OK I know you are canadian, but there you go)

I hate it. Why do I need some music played to persuade me that something important has happened or to induce me to celebrate it?

I imagine that the marketing people will say "we have carried out market research and we have discovered that families with young children are favourable to the idea" or something similar.
I'd love to hear adverts from the sponsors of the footy teams!:D just imagine, an O2 ad when thingy score.

Nobody likes it when the shoe is on the other foot.:)

It wasn't me that brought up hockey, fool.

But it's certainly you who has added nothing remotely on topic to this thread.
Now go away.

Ahh, well then you missed my entirely on-topic post then. Not surprising for you i guess.

Now, go away.

not some DJ monkey playing the branded 'club theme' on cue.

Bit unfair to pick on Chelsea's next money spinning practice isn't it? They've got the compilation discs really and everything...
