Ps: It’s good to see some West Country rivalry going on here BTW. I’m neutral on the Bristol/Swindon thing as I’m from Bath,

which is vastly superior to both :p

Bath?

Shouldn't you be on the rugger threads with the other Will Carling types?

Bath for rugger obviously, though I'm more of a footy mean really, hence.. I support:

Man U !!

(Please don’t make me have to launch in some big justification on this front cos it bores me stupid; yes, I started supporting them when they were shit in the 80s; yes, I go to Old Trafford; etc etc.)

Saw Rovers quite a few times when they played at Bath, so a bit of soft spot there too

I dunno really. depends. Would prefer to see England win the world cup and West Ham finish 11th than England not win it and West Ham finish, ooh, 9th. But if West Ham were in with a serious chance of winning the Prem, I would have to put that ahead of an England World Cup win.

In other sports, it's far more clear cut. I don't really bother following either cricket or Rugby Union at club level, so it's England every time.

Leicester's a love that won't be diluted but I do really enjoy the world cup, the optimism leading up to that quater final stage! Haha, uh. But for games that you'll probably only see on the tv it doesn't seem to be a bit more of an event to see the world cup down the pub.

Not much patriotism on this thread is there? I've had great times following Swindon and England, so I find it very hard to separate the two. The chances of Swindon winning anything in the foreseeable future are nonexistent, whereas I think England have got a great opportunity to win the World Cup this summer. If the Town ever manage, by some miracle, to get out of the bottom division (because that's where we're heading) it will be brilliant, and a cause for much drunken celebration. But it will hardly be comparable to England being World Champions.
Do ya know, that's just about what I expected from you.

Not a criticism mind, just an observation.

The national team can kiss my ass, particularly as long the the Pinochet-lover is in charge. That doesn't mean I'll support the other side, but haven't stopped me from cracking jokes two minutes after the Euro 2004 final.

As it's an observation and not a criticism, I will reply in a civil manner!

Maybe it's because I have actively followed England abroad that I have more of an affinity with the national team than most other people on this thread. It seems that for some, including Wide Eyed Angel, following England means watching them on the telly in a pub (observation not criticism!).

I've had some brilliant times following Swindon, but often the football just gets in the way of having a good drink with my mates. Following England is always eventful and never feels like a chore, which is how it feels sometimes supporting a lower league club. Maybe if I was an Arsenal fan and got to go to Europe every year I'd feel less inclined to follow England. Who knows?

i would have england win the world cup over west ham getting in europe this season.

But small club unlikely to win anything so if you gave me the choice of winning the premiership or the world cup i would be tempted for the league. But to be honest i know more poeple who would be a hell of a lot happier with england winning stuff so probbaley england still.

what's the happiness of other people got to do with it, kained?!

Ckub, every, every EVERY time. England play once in a blue moon and although I'll be following them in the world cup watching them will never replace watching Forest. I'm not surprised at the outcome of the poll at all, I'd personally say most fans would choose club over country in most cases.

Country, every time. Every player should be proud of the chance to represent their home. Unless, of course, they play for Celtic. In which case they need to focus. No slips, no mistakes allowed.
Seriously though, national level football's the only place where victory can't be bought. Time and quality are all you get to work with. And the twists are the sweeter. Scotland- Brazil 1998 anyone?

I cried. I was in the pub and the feeling at 1-1 was just unbelievable. We could have done it but one stupid unforced error and we achieved a historic and brave defeat. Very Scottish. Tom fucking Boyd we used to call him. Still do, though we do not often speak his name.

distinct swing to the right recently in the poll results. I remember the days when it was 100% club...
