Club Nicaragua - Friday 13th March

We got a review...!!! A good one too. Even though it's only in Deep (local South London listings mag) it's a start...

Click here to see what happened when they sent their journo along (it's on page 58, you can use the page finder thingy) or pick up a copy in your local pub/venue. It looks like this -

This club malarky, it's fun init.

:):)

1) It's in Croydon
2) It's a rip off of an existing, longer-running better night
3) Every picture I've seen has no more than about 5 people in it, and most of them are working in some context.
4) The (Croydon) magazine has Robin Hood on the front.

You got a point about the pics, they don't convey the numbers or the atmosphere too well. If you asked anyone who actually went they'd be able to tell you it's been pretty well packed both nights, and ther bar take was over £1,500 last time around with just one guy serving (a lot of peeps were going downstairs to the main bar for drinks 'cos of queues, so it could've been a lot more).

Coincidence maybe but we never intentionally ripped anyone off, Miss Nicaragua have been doing the revolutionary militia gimmick at gigs for over five years now and the spin-off club night came from that; staging 'revolutonary coups' and making some theatre out of the dj changes.

As for being in Croydon... well guilty as charged. Someone's got to try and liven the fucking place up once in a while. We don't charge nothing, we don't make nothing, just try to put on a party for people to come and enjoy themselves.

But your opions, fair enough... chips duly pissed on.

aww, I feel a bit bad now. Was in a argumentative mood this morning (like most) and yours was the first thread I saw.

Good luck with your night mate. I very much doubt anyone on here will go to it in all honesty. But then again, I've been known to be wrong..

In 1982, it had been a long day.. the facts were obvious I thought..

I wasn't really touting for business, just thought fellow urbanites might be interested. See, I'd never promoted a club night until recently and it was all a bit of a journey - quite different to playing gigs and doing the band-thing.

As for

could you explain; is it PROD you were getting at? And if so, what was the deal with that? I heard about it on 'ere and did intend to go on a couple of occasions but never actually made it to any to find out for myself. From what I gathered, it was a kinda 'bring your own records' deal. Whereas our 'let the people decide the tunes' is more of a gimmick to get some revolutionary-style theatre into the DJ changeovers.

Whatever the case, if we're ripping anyone off I'd like to know how so we can tweak our night and keep it as original as possible.

yes, it was Peoples Republic Of Disco I was talking about. It's been going longer and shares the same two basic elements - bring tunes for the dj to play/choose the music (not really different at all) alongside the same revolution/republic/the people decide theme as a brand. The differences you have is the country of origin and your 'revolutionary-style theatre into the DJ changeovers' which sound interesting, I'll say no more than that.

It's also a bit much to claim you're 'The only club where you decide what tunes you want to hear'.
Only club in Croydon maybe. :p

PROD aside, there are other nights that have a jukebox system or ask people to bring and play their own records/cds/ipod.

anyway, I really don't care that much. Do what you do, if people come and like it great.

e2a: and I only think you're replying to this to keep bumping your thread. Yes I do think you're touting for business.

Well one thing we don't have in common is the 'bring your own records' part, we change DJs depending on how packed the dancefloor is. It's more of a gimmick than the PROD thing which sounds properly authentic as regards to 'the people deciding' the tunes.

So yeah we should change the branding, cos it's evolved a bit since we originally marketed it as a 'you choose the tunes' kinda thing.

I figured bumping the thread was more polite than starting a new one every time we put on another night. It started from nothing, it's evolving and I thought it'd be better to keep it all in one place. If I'm breaking any rules or being cheap by letting people know there's a free night's entertainment going on, I'll wear that (I did consult the ed and he didn't seem to have a problem with it).
