Cloud Computing - has anybody converted to it yet?

So I've had my first experience of being shafted by The Cloud. The excellent organiser, task list and calendar thingy I Want Sandy is shutting its doors on December 8th.

It's not an uncommon experience. http://itdied.com has a list of Bubble 2.0 web apps and services which are going/have gone tits-up.

Well, you can still do this without using web apps. A nightly backup to, say, Amazon S3 is pretty secure, and if you use something like Dropbox, that's an extra level.

I've promised myself to do this sort of thing plenty of times, but realistically it's never going to happen regularly enough. The one person I can't trust with backups is me.

I also like Cloud Computing for other reasons. Soon I'll junk my 7 lb Thinkpad with its 90 minute battery life, its noisy fan and a tendency to burn my balls and get a 2 lb netbook with a big enough SSD to have an instantly available copy of everything recent, safe in the knowledge that, however disorganised I am, every few minutes there's a copy being kept for me in a server farm far, far away at somebody else's expense. I think the whole world's going to come around to this view quite soon.
