Cleared lawn for a veg plot - advice on what to grow please

Ok so the veg seeds are sown and this weekend the red cabbage plants went into the ground and so did the smaller spinach seedlings.

I potted on the broccoli seedlings into small pots and already the freakin pigeons have had 2 of them the twats  - I'm considering buying a blunderbus and blasting the fat sods out the sky.

Apparently Collared Doves and Wood Pigeons are on the increase. Now don't get me wrong, I am a bird lover but not when the twats go for my baby broccoli plants when there's all sorts of other food sources for them everywhere!

No more room for sweetcorn :( I think the rest of the lawn may have to come up :D

What might be worth planting if your gardens a bit short of sun?

Mine gets about 3 hours in most places, due to house and a couple of large trees.

I wanna plant something edible, but it ain't exactly perfect. Is there anything that will cope with these less than favourable conditions, and does not involve use of a chainsaw?

I read somewhere that leafy stuff like spinach might cope.

Gooseberries can cope with shade - just prune them like cordons
