Classic Pre-Sixties British Comedy Films

Oh, Mr Porter!

Brilliant film, that. All of Will Hay's films were good, although 'Oh, Mr Porter!' is the best. Ask A Policeman is the next best IMO, and his wartime one, 'The Goose Steps Out' is mighty amusing.

There's a few Norman Wisdom DVDs knocking around on usenet at the moment. Not everybody's cup of tea, but I think he's great. (They've all got great British character actors in them as well - Margaret Rutherford etc)

I like Follow A Star and The Square Peg.

The Ealing comedies are obvious, and School For Scoundrels spring to mind. What other classics are there?

The Carry On Etc Gang.

Our Man in Havana.

The Man in the White Suit.

Eric Sykes show, but that might be sixties.

Anything starring the great Will Hay, but especially Oh, Mr Porter and Ask a Policeman

Hobson's Choice is a great film. Enjoyable performance from Charles Laughton.

And I know it's not strictly a comedy but there was a real wit to Hitchcock's 39 Steps.

Which Will HAy film is Oh Mr Porter?

I loved Will HAy when I was younger, my favourite being the smuggling one where the old fella goes on about the headless horseman.:D

That's Ask a Policeman.

Oh Mr Porter is the one set on the railways - the one Belushi's put a still up from above.

My favourite bit is when they go and see the old fellas dad :D

<goes and looks at Will Hay box sets on Amazon>

Happiest Days of Your Life is awesome. Sim is the headmaster of a boys school that has to share its building with a girls school (run by Rutherford) that's been damaged by a bomb.

Two I've always liked are "Passport To Pimlico" and "The Titchfield Thunderbolt".

Classics, both of them
