why do you think this?? your posts do baffle me sometimes!!!

I think it because I think they were both utter shit.

The clash were namby pamby plinky plonk pussies. I can never quite feel the guts in the sex pistols. Lydons voice is horrible. Whiny whiny whiny. All too clean. They sound like busted.

i didn't think you liked the ramones all that much either

I'm in the "has some good tracks, but mostly filler" camp, I'm afraid.

Besides, I like shouty Americans in short trousers, and am therefore usually sent away from punk threads by Pistols fans... ;) :D

If you compare the Punk albums the Clash released to Bullocks-the clash are obviously more sophisticated both musically and lyrically. The best songs of their first album stand above anything on Bullocks.

Never the less Bullocks was the first Punk album I heard and I still enjoy it.

American hardcore punk - Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Husker Du, etc - is better than both of those imo.

Out of those it would be The Clash. I'm sure Never Mind the Bollocks was revolutionary at the time and all that but I wasn't around and musically it doesn't really do much for me.

Don't understand the hate for Sandinista and Combat Rock, I think they're great albums (although the former is a bit over-long).

Used to prefer the Pistols but The Clash have a much longer shelf life. As Strummer himself said they (The Pistols) were the hand grenade that was thrown into the room just at the right time and blew the doors wide open for everyone else to come on in. Great article in the Guardian today about the jubilee publicity stunt on the Thames. This is what the Pistols were all about. Winding up the establishment and they did it very well.

True after the first album The Clash weren't true punk, they were more of a political rock band and were extremely clever at mixing all kinds of musical genres.

In summary both bands were equally important but for different reasons but on the music alone it's the Clash for me

"the clash were lacking in raw energy"

Utter and complete fucking tosh. In their prime they were pure fucking electricity. And has there ever been a more passionate and committed performer than strummer?

I can't remember how I voted in this. Both have their merits, and I wasn't alive for either of their original incarnations.
