Claremont Road/M11 protest 1994-1995 - photos and info

....took the cops by surprise - out came the truck and the tripod scaffolding and it was street party on. My best mate at the time was one of the 'organisers' so I used to hang on his coatails and go along for the ride. Maybe I'm just an old tired fart now (not maybe I am ) but to engage in those days you had to get out and connect with people and get involved. And if you fancied yourself as an intellectual had to have a shed load of books. Now it's all to easy and bloody easy to get distracted and become a keyboard warrior and fact check everything within milliseconds.

I was there quite a bit. It gets a bit blurry but was it also the place with the old tree that Winston Churchill had first fought to reprieve in the 1920's? The old tree was cut down after the tree-house people had been removed with cherry-pickers. Then it was all about the independent Republic of Wanstonia....

Yeah I remember the Oak Tree was the first place to be lost - Claremont Road was Custer's Last Stand on the anti-roads movement and Earth First were quite popular as a new entity of a new deep green eco-movement inspired by Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang.

Claremont Road wasn't the last stand on even that protest tbh. whilst most moved on somewhere else or went back to their lives, some of us ;) stayed to be see another two last stands (at Fillebrook road and Green Mania).

What goes around comes arround with the Torlibdem axis of evil road building plans see Hastings Bypass etc and not just the anti-roads movement but I wonder how long we are all back in Hyde Park protesting the not if but when invasion of IRAN and its alledged WMD nukes

Excellent video here

The Last House - June 20 1995 - The six hour siege and eviction of Munstonia, the last of hundreds of houses to be demolished to make way for the M11 Link Road through London's East End. Damon Alburn, from Blur, grew up just opposite.
