Citizen Kane

It's beautifully lit and shot, and Welles turns in a good performance and gave good direction, but I preferred his performances in Moby Dick, The Third Man and The Magnificent Ambersons.
Kane is, IMHO a "great film", but it's "great" at least as much because of what and who it inspired, as because of what it is.

Thanks, i watched it again last night and i am pretty sure i love it because of the soundtrack. I think, VP there is room in the world for appreciators at both elementary and expert levels like you and me. I am literally floored by that scene where the soul singer suddenly announces 'It cant be love' while kane and his lady are stuck in Xanadu. My God, the script along with it was exemplary. But my question is who wrote that sound track? The whole film has left me spellbound.

Well, some have said it's Hearst's nickname for his mother, however as El Jefe mentioned before, Gore Vidal once said that it was Hearst's nickname for his girlfriend's clitoris. This has now become widely believed Fact.

:)

In actual fact, a nickname Hearst's mate gave to his (Hearst's) mother

its so beyond brilliant and i never get bored at the boring bits cos i love the music, citizen kane is one of the reasons i continue to 'live'

I've never gotten it to be honest

I've seen it twice, and it is good. but I think the coen brothers and the simpsons taking the piss out of it so much kind of ruined the effect for me.

citizen kane is one of my lifes most amazing moments. I watched it last night and i love it so much i am watching it again on sunday!

To echo what others have said, Citizen Kane is, on the level of a drama, a good film (and Welles is never less than compelling). I believe he was only 24 or 25 when he made it, which is extraordinary.

It's a little like Ulysses, I think. If you want to write novels, you really should read Ulysses, because it will almost certainly open your eyes to possibilities you hadn't thought of. The same is true of CK - wow, you can do that!

It's not my favourite Welles film - I think The Trial is that. This is a man who had to scramble for finance all his life, which is fucked up. He was in his mid-twenties when he made this! What could he have gone on to do with the finance?
