Child tax credit. Am I getting too much?

A Suplex-have you told them you are self employed but earning zero? If so that could be why?

he's not entitled to help with nursery fees!

That's what I thought, but he seems to be saying that he's getting money for that.
If I put in the same details including £700 a month nursery fees it still says £750ish a year in tax credits.

Was she not working last year? They base it on your previous tax year's income.

If I do the same, but put AS down as working 40 hours a week, self-employed for no money it comes out as £5076.27 a year.

Are you contesting this? It may be worth contacting your local CAB. My sis got slapped with a demand to repay over £3,500, but after taking advice (and requesting copies of all records pertaining to her claims from the tax credits people), they dropped it because they hadn't followed their own procedures properly.

Something similar happened with us. We just kept saying "Show us how you think we owe you this money", and they kept saying "no", then threatening, and so it went on. Then they stopped asking about 18 months ago.

It's all about to begin again, though, different sums of money, different reasons for overpayment. And I'll go through the same procedure again: when they can provide ME with the source information on which the calculation of overpayment is based, and when they can demonstrate the calculations for that overpayment, I'll accept there's money owing. But because they cannot ever keep their story straight from one claim to the next, I'm not inclined to take their word for anything.

I wasn't being stroppy. Sorry if it looked like it.

I did think it was odd but I'm pretty sure I have been a good boy and not told any lies.

Only way to find out is give them a ring (make sure you report back!). It doesn't mean you've lied neccessarily. Have you renewed by 31 July like a good boy?

are you still? if you aren't you need to tell them within 30 days.

We I told them just now (and it was less than 30 days).

They say they had me down as being on income based JSA, which I was never on. Also how could they have made that mistake? They have my wifes details which say what she is earning which automatically mean I can't get income based JSA.

Gahh, it must be a few thousand by now as it has been since April. They are going to wipe out my account.

They don't demand any payment. We're actually owed £800 this year, but we're not getting it as it's going towards the back pay of this £7000. So we'll not get anything for the next 8 years!

eta I really don't understand this....I got a pay rise of 3.5k and I lose £7k ....gah, it's all too confusing and makes me mad.

Was there over-payment to you on the basis of them having cocked up/not updated information you'd provided them with? If the over-payment can be attributed to their error, rather than an error of yours, then the basis on which they withhold your tax credits is quite shaky and basically they're strong-arming/bullying you.
If that's the case, see someone at the CAB/local law centre. It's worth a punt, and if you apply for under the Data Protection Act for copies of all written and audio communications you've had with them, you can generally prove your case if it's their fuck-up.

It seems a lot tbh.....I earn just over £13,000 a year and get £78 a week combined WTC/CTC for one child !

They are fucking idiots. They have never ever got my amount of money right and the foal is now 2 1/2. Last year I got an extra £750 at the end of the year and was too scared to spend it because I was convinced they'd made a mistake and had got it right first time. Turns out it was right but it would have been a lot more useful when I was only working 3 days a week and paying through the nose for nursery

I don't mind as long as they don't demand it all back in anyway other than taking it out of my child benefit (which will take years)

Dont ever expect tax credit people to get things right.

I worked there once, it was part time job in the evnings hot desking with the fulltime revenue staff.

My section of about 25 was mostly made up of schoolkids who came straight from school, and a large number of women who seemed to be doing the job just as a way of getting out of the house and socialising. If you gave the same claim to everyone in the section you would have had 25 different results. I saw it as a possible career, it was my only income and very important to me, but no one else seemed to take it seriously and realise that they were playing with people's lives.

I used to get letters from people like yourself saying that they were sure they were being overpaid and could they please stop receiving money, but we weren't allowed to stop their claims!! A claim could only be stopped if they gave a legitimate reason, ie they no longer qualified.

As for traceability it is very easy for someone to change the history of comunication on your computer file, there is no big folder with all your letters and stuff in it. Claims and renewals are dealt with at different offices round the country, as are changes in circumstances, it is quite possible that details you provided were entered onto the system without anybody even looking at your missus circumstances, thats why the anomlay of you receiving JSA would not have been noticed, that and the fact that a group of monkeys would have as much chance of coming up with the right figure than the people they employ.

Interesting. I do think that they fucked up, I'll have to hassle them!
