Chickens

Im excited! Off to London City Farm this weekend to check out the chickens and see how I get on.

Im deciding which varieties I want, the Fog horn Leghorn types are so very pretty!

I may get a new lush one and a few bedraggled ex-battery hens.

GREAT news about local cats potentially getting their come uppance!

So the paving and lightly wooded area should be ok then?

I'M GETTING CHICKENS! Hurrah!

The chickens will clear it in no time. We let ours run free last year and they turned the garden into a desert. I've penned them in now and grown a new lawn from seed. We have six chickens and they'll all lay an egg on most days so we have to give loads away.

Rather than paying for a battery rescue. I they're free then cool, just don't want others making money out of somethig they get given for free! :)

They (LHR) had a horrible accident in the week and lost a trailer and 4x4 so urgently need donations too. :(

I got cheap chicken wire off a company on the internet (I could try to find the link if you like) and bought a load of 2" by 2" lengths of treated timber. I don't think it was too expensive. They are dying to get to the new grass but they are going to have to manage on mowed grass from now on.

Someone on my street (Brixton/Herne Hill) has chickens they want to get rid of if anyone's interested. Good layers, apparently.

yes please!!!

My chickens were £7 each from a breeder/egg farm in Caerphilly
Mr welshegg:)

Ive started giving mine a washing up bowl of water every day because they kick their drinker over immediately:rolleyes:
The washing up bowl seems to do the job, they perch on the sides and bathe/drink

We tried Mr Welsh Egg but they were a bit stroppy when we phoned to inquire. Ours knock their water over too so I've put one of those gardening trugs in there. Our only problem is finding someone to look after them when we go away later in the year. We've only ever left them for two nights before and we just put two full feeders in. They were fine but I couldn't leave them for a week.

Chickens make great pets, much more interesting than rabbits or Guinea pigs. The kids won't leave then alone and even the dog seems to enjoy their company.
