Chickens

No. You'll be getting light sussex :)

It's not just down to me unfortunately... I bet she goes: I want one of them! I want one of them!! :) (She wants to go to a farm to look at chickens this w/e! See if she's happy with them in the garden)

Are there many probs mixing breeds? I'm probably going to get 3.

No, I have a right rag tag bunch. Get 2 light sussex and one silkie :) I've got some chickens that I got just because they're pretty. Everyone does it. The one good thing about silkies is they have feathered feet so they won't fuck up your garden. Did you take up that persons offer of getting the details of the next auction? You'd fucking love it. I bet Moonpig would too.

Is that dependant on how long you hang it? Or if you hang it?
We don't hang them, they go straight in the freezer. I think it's breed dependent. Our eaters are usually all crosses but crosses from old breeds. Shops want fast growing breeds.

If its layers you want, you could do worse than Warren xs or Goldlines. Mine are little egg machines.

Fuck all meat on em though.

BUMP!

Kanda I may just beat you to the punch. I want chickens!

I found a lovely henhouse online a few weeks back, and have just cleared a little room for it and a decent sized run. I think I'll be ordering it this week. I just concerned about cats and maybe foxes.

Does anyone else keep chickens in a urban environment?

Re-post from the kitchen garden thread.

I didnt ask no, but its not been any issue at all! They dont make alot of noise, its the cockerells which cause issues with crowing. I need to clean up a bit at the mo cos theyve wrecked my garden and it smells a bit now its hot. Im not sure how much is down to the chooks cos I also have bad drains:o

Yes my chicken house has a roof this is it

But mines a bit small so Im building them a run to go with this this week... if you can, give them as much space as possible. I was happy to let them roam until I realised just how much damage they caused, they really do eat EVERYTHING thats green, they also dig holes, throw soil and stones everywhere and so on....its not good, either have a complete garden you devote to them and their domain/damage or build a run! They put themselves to bed at night and thats the time to feed/water them if you want to do it without getting pecked endlessly!

On your advice Im thinking about fencing off the rear of the garden to provide a much wider area for the run.

I have several problems though:-
The area has a good deal of paving, and also includes a large uncultivated raised bed. The bed has very tall woody shrubs, and a tree, the ground is covered in 100s of spring flowering allium bulbs which I 'd have to dig out to return the bed to any kind of use.

Sounds like an obstacle course doesnt it? Im worried it wont be suitable.

Plus the local cats would be able to jump on the roof. :(

remember to keep chicken food and grain in some kind of rat and mouse proof container like a galvinised bin or similar

I knew someone who had chickens on top of their boat. Whenever they stopped they'd get the run and put it to the side of the towpath. Genius imo.

Im excited! Off to London City Farm this weekend to check out the chickens and see how I get on.

Im deciding which varieties I want, the Fog horn Leghorn types are so very pretty!

I may get a new lush one and a few bedraggled ex-battery hens.

GREAT news about local cats potentially getting their come uppance!

So the paving and lightly wooded area should be ok then?

I'M GETTING CHICKENS! Hurrah!
