My 'top wings' rating is currently held by the estimable Chef Mo, in the Brixton Hobgblin of all places. Ridiculously tasty, fiery and moist 'buffalo-style' wings - the smell alone wafting from the kitchen is enough to get me salivating. Put them with a few pints and they're perfect 'aaaah' food.

they are very very good :D

word of warning though - tarannau will nick them off your plate ;)

I've never quite understood how a South African chain's cleared up selling Portuguese food, but good on them and their food.

Because there's a big Portuguese community in South Africa, I think. On the subject of fried chicken, can I also recommend kara age from Japan? Fried chicken wings in soy sauce, mirin, sesame seeds... mmmm...

There's a big Portuguese community everywhere. Bloody colonialists, taking and trading things all round the place. Taking chillis here there and everywhere - can't the South Africans specialise in Jedungo rather than piri-piri chicken or something.

 ;)

Kara age, or whatever those Japanese style wings are, are indeed good and proof of the global power that is fried chicken. Although I'll stick up for the humble 'Maryland' version as a classic too. With fresh breadcrumbs and buttermilk it can honestly be one of the most outstandingly tasty of foods - you'll just need an old Southern chef to cook for you.

Well, if you had offered them...

...you should have seen Tanky, wing-juice smeared all down her face, a veritable vision of bone-crunching speedeating. Milesy looked most distressed - all I could do was shorten his period of disgust was to help Tanky to eat those wings quicker. And more politely...

;)

I can't even walk past Chicken Cottage without feeling physically sick!

Let alone EAT one of those battery hens in batter!

The way people toss their battered bones over their shoulders after eating them makes me wanna vom, too.

But real Jamaican fried chicken sounds lovely....I wanna try that place down Coldharbour Lane, ChrisFilter mentioned it once, I can't for the life of me remember what it's called though.

Hate to say it, but West Indian fried chicken tends to be based on Southern KFC style chicken too. My relatives have cooked Southern/Maryland chicken for generations, with my nan legendary in the family for being able to replicate most dishes on one taste, including stuff that tasted exactly like KFC. Doesn't sound much of an achievement really, but spice mixtures and pepper sauce recipes were valuable commodities once.

There's also jerk chicken of course, which uses a moist marinade - usually predominantly scotch bonnets and thyme - but that's more pan fried, grilled or barbecued.

As much as I object to battery hens, at least you get to see the condition of the meat on the bones in fried chicken. The battery-farmed strips of weirdly textured meat you get in most sandwiches disturbs me more.

We have a Dixie Fried Chicken joint just up the road from us and I spent almost as much time there as I do in my local. :o :o :o

I think I'm addicted to Fried Chicken.

In terms of the recipe, I hear you :)

But in terms of the quality of the chicken, don't you reckon that a small, local, family-run fried chicken place is going to have better quality chicken and fresher spices than the frozen 'bones in batter' style chicken you get in a chain such as KFC?

Totally agree with you on that one! I wouldn't touch a chicken sandwich, ever. At least if there's a bone in it, you know it's real. Chicken sandwiches have horrible re-constituted jelly like lumps in that are probably just bollocks and brains. In a bun.

There's a Kenssy Fried Chicken on Leytonstone High Road.

Kenssy?? :D

Our local one in Streatham is Morley's and yes, I have popped in there for chips and/or nuggets/burgers/whatever when drunk but I've realised it makes me feel a bit sick :(

This thread is making me crave fried chicken and chips though!

I'd have thought they'd have bought the cheapest chicken going!

Judy's Divine... but that's jerk chicken, not fried chicken.

Nah, sadly I reckon they're all the same. Crappy chicken is the norm - unless it's shouting organic or free range you can virtually guarantee that the chicken used in catering, sandwiches and fast food joints is the lowest standard. Don't count on supermarket ready meals either - it's worth noting that Tesco's and Sainsburys were both caught using Thai 'dogfood only' certified chicken in their children's menus. People always want to think the conditions in Brixton market are horrible, but it's generally far worse in an industrial context - and at least it's comparatively hard to mask damage/decay in whole meat portions.

:(

Besides. I think you're doing the majority of fried chicken places a slight disservice. They almost certainly won't be buying in ready coated frozen portions of meat, they'll be coating the chicken themself. Indeed, one of the main reasons why folks join franchises is to get their hand on the spice and coating mixes, one of the hardest things to get right. You can actually taste the 'family' difference between KFC, Chicken Cottage and Favourite Fried chickens for example.

Millions of people around the world enjoy fried chicken while still sober.

;)

I was crazy about KFC as a kid and, on occasion, I've really enjoyed a KFC meal sober in adulthood.

Fried chicken is pretty tasty, it's just the prospect of Chicken Cottage and its ilk that I find so offputting. In all fairness, there probably isn't much difference in terms of outlet hygiene/ingredient provenance between Chicken Cottage and KFC, but I would rather be in the KFC. I have nothing to back that up, it's just a preference.

I'm really wanting some fried chicken now, though, I have to say :D

Oh it's good for the drunken stomach, but I prefer a good chicken shish (is there anywhere in Brixton to get such a thing?)

Never been - do they only do chicken?
I rarely eat chicken eating out - I always go for red meat.

I like fried chicken as a take away but there isn't any nice fried chicken in Brixton (that I know of)

No nice fried chicken in Brixton? I'm confused now - South London's the veritable capital of the Friedchick Kingdom. What sort of treat are you looking for? I may be able to help.

On the red meat subject, if you can get to the Gallery on Brixton Hill they do excellent Piri-Piri ribs in addition to the more common chicken-variety.

Just nice chicken with no veiny stringy bits, not too greasy and nice spicy crunchy coating

Make it yourself you lazy fuck.. there's no excuse for making the resaurants richer when you're perfectly capable of doing it yourself

Eh? You've never found that in any fried chicken shop down here. You're not eating enough obviously - you'd have fluked on a bit now for sure. The best way to avoid the grease and get crispy skin is to get freshly cooked chicken - know your local shop and they'll take care of you.

The veins or stringy bits is admittedly a bit harder to predict. You can't ever get rid of them definitely - there's no art to knowing if the meat contains them. Short of x-raying through the skin and grading accordingly, you're going to have to take a risk. Bloody inconsiderate living animals, with their chupsty veins and things...

 ;)

They're definitely not all the same, but it's always difficult to recommend any one place in particular. Fried chicken's all about freshness - if the pieces sit around too long they'll become increasingly soggy and greasy. It's the real ale of the snack world - turnover is everything.

KFC tends to be consistently average as a result, with blander 'hot' things but good basic chicken imo. Other places boast their own spice mix - never try the grim variety used in Chick King or that place (Foodworks?) on Brixton Hill. I'm not that keen on the Dallas chain stuff either. And don't expect too much if you go first thing in the morning or late ar night.

I've got a sneaking liking for the Kennedy FGC down on Brixton Hill, who treated me well down the years. The Morley's down Streatham way and Streatham Vale are also consistently good.

But - hell - it's fried chicken and it's not worth analysing that much. Buy some and see if it tastes good. You'll only be risking half the price of a Pret sarnie...

:D

yep. another addicts confession.

i go to the one on CLH for my chips fix quite often (2-3 month). only chips though :o . i love the two indian guys (they also might be from pakistan..but i think it is india) who do the evening shift (one younger guy and one older). they do their own cooking of dal and rice on an original indian kind of stove in the back of the shop. once i bought a portion of that instead (i had to insist giving them money for it). i think they are smart guys watching their own diet ;)

i am appaled by the way some of their customers treat them though. rarely hear a please nor thank you in that place whilst i am in there.

I wish I wasn't going round to someone's house for dinner tonight, because I really could murder a zinger burger and chips now

Something tells me I'm having a power lunch on Coldharbour Lane tomorrow...
