Chelsea and the Abramovic millions - good for football?

nonamenopackdrill said:
Well exactly; this kind of move stops that kind of potential ever being reality.

You mean because even with a halfway to ambitious board, the good young players will still want to go to chelski?

Still, it looks as if some are now being put off, like theo walcott.

Eh, at 'potential' worth £10M!

Not like the big shocks in history like (in the FA Cup final) Sunderland beating Leeds, Wimbledon beating Liverpool, Coventry beating Spurs, and Liverpool beating Everton (yeah, ok, twice).

I keep hearing people quote these two 'shocks' in serious conversation (I know the Liverpool one is a joke) - neither were real shocks. In Coventry's case in 87 they finished the season in the top ten in the top flight while Tottenham finished about fifth - not exactly giant killing. In 88 Wimbledon finished sixth in the top flight and had already beaten Liverpool in the League - another 'non shock' !

Indeed I believe this was the last really big giant killing:

A good observation from the BBC commentators in yesterday's Salisbury - Forest game was that how Cloughie's great side weren't global superstars but reasonably local lads who often didn't achieve away from Nottingham. I'm too young to remember that but it still makes me remenice.

Same things happened at Barca to an extent - yeah there's been a couple of big name signings, but over half the team that won the CL and league were from the youth team. The youth players we've sold have never achievde great things elsewhere - De La Pena a prime example at Lazio.

The money issue has always been there, but now it's getting to silly amounts. Our president reckons we'll have to accept shirt sponsorship in order to compete effecitvely, despite winning two league titles and the CL without any. His argument is that Abramovich and others who are looking at football clubs will skew the transfer market to such a degree that even big clubs won't be able to compete.

The answer seems to be develop your own talent as we've done, but there will also always be clubs - Ajax beign the obvious example - who are still years ahead of other clubs in terms of scouting but will be, primarily a test bed for players who then move on. Jefferson Farfan is just the latest example.

Football's been fucked for a good 15 years, it's merely accerlating with Abramovich and rich tycoons buying into clubs. But you won't here a murmur from many if their club is successful....where are all the Man U fans demanding Glazer goes now?

"Some of us are quite good, and we want to play in a good team..." - you didn't realise we were talking about you?

(perhaps I shouldn't have said that :o)
No - because ye weren't, I was a regular starter for most of the games we played and when I dropped out for a bit plenty of people asked me to come back. Most of the team were very happy when you stopped coming though - we think you're a twat.
What I'm saying is I can understand why you are not good enough to play (grew up playing gaelic football and are not good enough) and don't watch (only have a surreal attachment via the internet).
I simply don't have the time to turn out for the fifth team of some shitty conference side like you do and I see most Liverpool games.
Still, well done on gaining a potential Abramovich - that's success for the generation of the Sky Sports, or which I hear you're a paid up member.
I don't have Sky and I never have - Why do you have to make up stuff for your points?. Bless...
Actually, following a pm, that's way too personal. Apols to SK for slagging off his sheer footballing ability. He's certainly confident in his ability and tries hard.
Everyone on the whole board knows what a sorry sad sack of shit you are but I just thought I'd put the record straight, I'm putting you back on ignore.

lol, who's getting personal now? :D

to be honest i've got more respect for someone who supports a "rubbish"/unfashionable team like everton than a redshite scummer :D (even if everton are premiership rubbish as opposed to my 4th division rubbish :p)

It started with the Premiership and bSkyb - it'll turn into something like the NBA eventually.

Basically, a show.

Blackburn got in there first; Leeds tried and failed; Man U have been consistent.

Chelsea are just following the commercial lead set by these teams, and they needed foreign money to do it.

So: good for football. Nope. Unless you like the razzamattazzzzz.

btw: I thought you supported 5 teams

Another one of those 'I am the best supporter in the wooorrrlllddd' moments.

You would think that mmmmmmm was back from the gutter the way this one is going.

There you go. A real fan because he watches the games on TV. Well done. :D

Like it wasn’t just a.n. other flimsier pop at the ‘pool from the off?

I was having a pop at Chelsea obviously. Liverpool fans have traditionally agreed with me that winning titles via cash isn't the same as building a team and that I'd prefer to be where we are rather than winning anything like that.

Indeed...what potentially could be a fascinating thread, is only a masked attempt at noname' slagging off the Red's.

erm...Chavski offered 16 million, so money didnt matter in this respect and I hope more follow suite.

And you forget that Arsenals money is not bankrolled by an individual or the stock exchange. The money they are able to spend is by playing the football people want to watch and having success with it.

Our stadium will be payed off in four years, after that we'll be able to compete with the big boys.

The sad thing is Chelsea have the chance to build the greatest football team the world will ever see and play the most beautiful stylish attacking football you could imagine that would sweep all before them . But the havnt they play a horrible style of un attractive football that really is shit to watch . Barca are the best team in the world at the moment in type and style of football played imho .

Is this true? I thought it was about 30 years.
erm...:o :o

My mistake! It's a fourteen year loan. Arsenal have just released some bonds and the monies saved from that will kick in in a few years.

I'm not (in any way) financially savvy....here's the link...(which is also relivant to liverpool and chavscum and man u...worth a read in the context of this thread)

Arsenal play great football achieved at the fraction of the cost of Barcelona or Chavski.

Ok...maybe not great last night....:D

Premiership fans moaning about all Chelseas money make me laugh....I hope they win everything for the next 10 years...

What?? tb....you supporting an economic migrant putting pressure on the domestic market.

Be consistent at least ?? !

Consistent? If you took the players salaries from any of the top 4 clubs, you could probably stop millions of people from starving across the world....
Premiership supporters are not really in a very strong position to talk about Abrahamovics money ruining football....As though before he came everything was really hunky dory.
