Cheese on Toast

Molly Snr is indeed a rare bird and most people would grill it. But the moment that the first bubbles appear, cheese on toast has been transformed into toasted cheese.

I think his take on it is largely that he doesn't know how to use the grill. And he wanted to hide this fact so if I was making it for him he'd always refuse the grilling.

When Americans et al talk about grilled cheese, do they mean cheese on toast? Or just cheese, alone, grilled. Maybe a halloumi or something?

i thought grilled cheese was a toastie rather just one slice.

last night for tea i made cheese on toast by lightly toasting slices of granary bread, lightly buttering, and sprinkling on a load of grated cheddar, red leicster and double glouster before whacking under the grill. i used the excess grated cheese to sprinkle on a plate and whack in the microwave for 20 secs till all melty, shaped it into a heart shape, let it cool and crisp, and used to decorate mr feyr's plate :)

second batch was made with red leicster and grated mozzerrela, with bits of ham, onions and using garlic butter under the cheese

That cheese looks like it was melted in a microwave. :hmm:

I can assure you it was done under a grill

The bread was starting to burn round the edge though, so had to take it out before the cheese browned. Will have another go later - clearly need to perfect this :D

Tried buttered toast with melted cheese on - it is a bit richer and tastier, and a bit more moist, I wouldnt use that shit low fat spread on toast though, I use country life.

Ah, ok. I'll believe you. :D

I always go for having burnt toast edge rather than under-cooked cheese.

Is there a way round this? If you only toast the bread on one side, it doesn't work, cos it's still soft under the cheese.

I lightly toasted the bread on the cheese side before adding the cheese. But then it started to burn round the edges before the cheese was done :(

Don't know what the answer is

Will just have to keep making cheese on toast until I get it right :)

I love a grilled cheese sandwich.

You don't toast the bread but you melt the cheese on a slice of bread and make a sandwich out of it with lashings of ketchup.

The other big issue is whether you eat it with your fingers or a knife and fork?

I always use a knife and fork.

Grate the cheese, pref. lancashire or cheddar, stir in a couple of tablespoons of beer and a splash of Henderson's Relish, spread on granary toast, put under grill until bubbling. Serve with the rest of the bottle of beer.

Well you've all made me have my second slice of cheese on toast in a day now.

One slice of multigrain, grilled a bit then lightly buttered, with slices of raclette and slices of cathedral city machine cheddar. Wafer thin hints of onion and tomato on top, then a couple of dots of Russian mustard and Henderson's relish, and in it goes.

I shall be eating it with a knife and fingers.

cheese and onion toasties are the best. :)
I have to use the iron and wrap the toastie in foil though as I havent got a toastie maker.
