'Cheap' skiing holidays....

lapland is coming up cheap at the mo (not as good as it will in jan) but 4 of you can go to a cabin for a week for under a grand then ski school with lessons, passes and hire will cost you about 200 each so for under 500 you can go skiing - it's not mega cheap but then skiing isn't - you may get a cheap deal somewhere but the ski hire/passes/lessons etc can really add up and as places go, lapland is cheap - if you fancy it let me know and I can tell you where the deals are

you can also do all the other activities such as husky safaris, snowmobiling, northern light spotting etc

Aviemore looks enticing at the moment.

Some things you can do to help keep the costs down...(if you're not on apckage that includes all this).

1) TK Maxx does have cheap gear. Salopettes, trousers, jackets, gloves etc. In some places you can get by with thermal pants, tracky bottoms and waterproof trousers, but I wouldn't recomend it in most places. Tesco are apparently launching their own skiwear, and Decathlon have some pretty cheap stuff.

2) It can work out cheaper to buy your gear rather than rent it if you're going for two weeks. You can pick up 2nd hand stuff, or go somewhere like Decathlon (here you can pick up a snowboard for 80 euros). Obviously the costs mount up, so you'd have to make sure you were getting it cheap.

3) Some resorts in the Alps have free lift passes for kids. I'll try and check which these are. That will save a lot of money. Others will do deals if you book in advance, or for a certain block of time. Also if you're not an early riser half/day or late start passes are cheaper. But remember lots of pistes and lifts start shutting at about 4pm.

4) Think about the transfer from airport to resort. Some can be reached on public transport, some from airports like Milan, Venice, Barcelona etc, which a) have budget flights and b) aren't neccesarily more expensive during ski season.

But, it will end up pretty expensive regardless. A package is probably the way to go...

I would love to go again but the cost is too much.

Andorra was very good and the duty-free shopping meant that it was easy to turn up empty handed and purchase what we needed there.

It is possible to ski in the Serra de Estrela here in Portugal. Not sure of the quality or costs. I'll see if I can get some information.

E2A What about going to Sun Parks in Belgium Ardennes, cheap, child friendly, cross country skiing, so safe for getting a feel for the sport?

Sunparks: http://www.sunparks.be/en/54825 prices are per accommodation not per person

We have used Sunparks for bases when cycling around Belgium and into Holland. They are nice little cottages, and there is the pleasure of having a log fire to sit in front of after a hard winter's day sport.

Morrocco would probably work out cheap as well. Easyjet to Marakesh, and a couple days skiing too.

One day I plan to try this.

Iran and Lebanon too will have unusual ski resorts at low prices.

crystal used to go there, used to...

places like andora are cheap but snow can be dodgey. not good for learning, the spainish resorts, if still going will be even worse.

last minute deals in france?

Dunno.... it looks like it could be a good winter. Some alpine resorts have opened a month early, The Lecht in Scotland has already (briefly) been open. I had good fresh snow in Austria back at the end of October...some of the more marginal resorts could have a good season this year (fingers crossed).

the liftpass in Dizin in Iran was $5 a day when i was there in 2001. the slopes themselves were a bit ropey. too many moguls . but the off piste was empty and quite easy

the nightlife was limited though

i know of people who go back to andora season after season. but these seasonaires go back cos of the little drinking communities that form and of course the low prices!

im heading up to alpe d'huez on Sunday, my mate who is already there is excited about the snow that coming soon!

have you already been out chilango?

Yeah Stubai, Austria at end of Oct. 6 to 10" of fresh snow. Snowed all day too. But high high winds,s they ended up shutting most of the lifts. Hopefully, money permitting, somewhere in Italy for the weekend of the 8th Dec next. Big big dump over the Alps at the end of Oct early Nov so conditions are looking pretty good. Here in Milan it is cold, and been raining plenty which is a good sign.
