Cheap but reliable laptop

I don't know, normal size screen :D I don't want a little tablet/netbook sized thing though. What's the difference between a Chromebook and a laptop? I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop now and I see there are Inspiron chromebooks available.

This gives some useful background - Top 3 reasons to buy a Chromebook over a cheap Windows laptop

Unless you want to run Windows-specific apps or run hefty graphics/video programs, Chromebooks take care of everyday stuff faster and with none of that bloody firewall/virus checking/never ending updates palaver.

Is 12.5 inch big enough for you? I have a bigger 15 inch laptop too and find my smaller screen perfectly fine for everything. But my x230 is super portable and sturdy, even though it only weighs a kilo or so.

I would really recommend getting a reconditioned thinkpad with an SSD already installed. One of these look like an excellent deal, as it has a top quality IPS screen too. You cannot get anywhere near this level of quality at this price new, and this laptop will do everything you throw at it and can run anything, unlike a chromebook. Only issue is you may not get more than 2 hours from the battery, but you can always buy a replacement in the future if necessary, or it could be in great nick as it is.

If you think that's too small then a reconditioned X1 Carbon would be 14 inches and would also be a solid buy. Can find a link if that would be better.
