Cheap 4x4 ideas?

but when I do (Festivals or Moving house/camping) the MG is seriously not up to the job.

Forget the Cherokee - it's fucking tiny inside. Uslessly so.

Also as Firky said they're shite. A mate had the 2.5 TDi (from new) and it was in the garage at least 5 times one year.

I have always wanted one of these:-

Don't go for the cherokee. I had a 4.0 and whilst it was nice to drive the thing cost me a fortune in petrol and upkeep.

Having said that, i can sell you one cheap that needs a new radiator and front wing! :o

That'll be why I was thinking of the 2.5TD.... 29.5MPG, not far off my MG.

What was reliability like on yours?

could you weld a cheap front wheel drive car and a cheap rear wheel drive car together?

Yes you could. It would be pointless though. Something to do with transmissions, gearboxes and such ;)

so-so.

There was always something wrong with it tbh, battery this week, radiator leaking the next.
In fairness i probably didn't give it enough tlc over the years, but on balance, i've had better.

I want something I can cart my crap about in, I want something I am not gonna get stuck in fields in. I do fuck all miles so it doesn't actually make any difference if it's a 4x4 or a Cortina estate tbh.. it's about it being practical and able to do everything I want it to do.

You want a Unimog then.

Lada Neva?

I always fancied one

You can pick them up for @£100 or less if you try. Our field station had a couple that spent years bashing about study sites all over a large & very muddy estuary/dune system area & stood-up to the abrasive mud/sand really well.

We only replaced them with a couple of brand new Land Rovers a month or so ago. :)

If you want something cheap get one of these they're cheap as hell at the mo and Fizzer calls him IVOR

Its a 3.0 TDi and it'll run on veg oil with no tweaking.

There's a 2" body lift and 3" suspension lift which gives me all the clearance I need for off roading, The snorkel with breathers in it means it can get very deep into water. The guy who had it before me showed me him driving it up to his neck in a wallow. You'll actaully shit it about bein able to breath way before the engine'll suck in water. When we got it there was a muddy watermark on the inside :D

Actually in all fair honesty the guy who owned it before me used it for racing in challenge events and the like. So the engines all been tuned up as well. He uses discos to do it as they are soo cheap and the hoorays keep buying defenders to use on the road fucking up the prices of those. A fucking D reg one can still grab 4k.

Anyway I get 30-35ish MPG out of it easilly enough, even on chip fat. It'll do 80 mph. . . however over 65 on the motorway and its a fight to keep it on the road, :) but thats cos its jacked up and wearing off road tyres

Oh and everyone gets the fuck out of your way when you drive it around.

and yes its covered in proper mud cos its a proper 4x4 and gets used properly

all for the sum of . . . £1300.

We are considering chopping it in for this

but we still like IVOR

To add, the problem with going with something like DJBombscare's beast (I bet that thing is a ball in the rough stuff  ), or an old school landrover Defender is that they are usually pretty horrible to drive on the road at speed, often uncomfortable and lacking in creature comforts for those long journeys and a bit of a shit to drive around town which is, let's face it, where yours will likely spend the majority of it's time, even if you do have off-road plans for it.

The slightly softer jap SWB 4x4's are still not exactly luxurious, nor are they the pinnacle of dynamic driving and handling, but they are significantly better than some of their hardcore peers in that respect and they will still get you, Treebeak and your tent out of a waterlogged field or up and down rough tracks.

:)

If in Blighty, get an old Trannie or an LDV. 4WD is irrelevent. Unless you live on a farm- then park it on the road.

A decent second hand Daihatsu sportrack is the business for serious work.

(Before they went all gay and user friendly)

You have to get out and lock the drives manually for maximum traction, but economical, in normal mode quite nippy, and with the air intake attachment will go through 1.5 metres of river no prob.

Like most 4 wheel drives, about as much luggage space as a Mini though.

(I think they are known as 'Serozas' outside of Blighty). I may be wrong and that is the name of the outer wall of the intestine. I get confused these days.

E2A- The Suzuki Jimni; definitive chocolate fireguard. Wouldn't trust one to get out of the 'wrong sort of leaves'

Id recomend a Mitsubishi Warrior / L200 double cab.
You can Pick up a 2.5TD for around £3.5k
Gives you the luxury of a car with the flexability of a pick-up /4x4

What Swarf said, Pajero will be less grief and more car at that money than anything else you could buy. Discos are troublesome.

However, if you want the best festie option then stretch your budget to a Mazda Bongo

Get a van or a pick-up. Dont bugger about with a four-seater if you want it for moving house etc.

I've got a hi-lux thats recently failed its MOT............

any takers?:p
