Charles Manson dead

Allegedly Manson’s followers turned up at Polanski’s house thinking that record producer Terry Melcher(Doris Day’s son) still lived there.
Manson held Melcher responsible for his (Manson) failure in the music business. Sharon Tate and her friends died a horrendous death.
Some of his songs sound like a cross between America, the Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. I wonder if he had success, would he have achieved the ‘fame’ he did by persuading disaffected kids to kill.

well a very long lasting one for sure - in terms of the way people born way after it happened know about it through films, books, documentaries & its influence on the culture. How many biographies of CM are there + other general books ? Its similar to Brady & Hindley in that respect.
And oddy when you express your ideas/views on here it will remain forever. Yet I ve never killed anyone or been responsible for someones death.
The brutal snake pit prison system of the 1950's, childhood tramour/englect, substance abuse, and other factors proberly psycosis/socopathic created what manson grew into.

No, he wouldn't have

By all accounts I have heard Manson was not present when the murders took place.

He wasn’t, he sent the acolytes in he wasn’t at Polanskis on the night of the killings. But he had visited the house when Terry Melcher lived there.
He had tied the victims up at another location before sending his killers in ‘to finish the job’.
I have edited my previous post and removed the superfluous ‘and his’

might have persuaded more of them to kill people through secret messages in the music

In Steve McQueen's autobiography he mentions that on the night of Sharon Tate and friends murder, LA's finest were all over Hollywood calling at the houses of the rich and famous to check all was okay.
He said thousands of dollars worth of drugs were flushed down toilets when the police started hammering on doors.

They were initially thought to be drug related killings, the cops had very little idea who the Manson’s were

I hadn't realised it took almost four months to make arrests in the case, must have been an unnerving time in LA - especially since the LAPD said a week after the killings that the Tate and LaBianca murders were unrelated. Also didn't know that they were only caught because Susan Atkins blabbed to her cellmates after being arrested in connection with a different murder...

Manson was shorter than I expected - at 5"3', he could have been in a room with Tom Cruise, Michael J. Fox, and Napoleon and still been the short one.

On a side note, I once met some of the Manson family. They were here visiting Manson in prison, and camping out. I had some LSD I traded them for some magic mushrooms they called purple people eaters. I live in Inyo county, where they were first arrested.

I don't think I'd be brave enough to melt my mind with the Manson magic mushrooms, I'd worry that the Family would start making sense.

the Manson madness of course (maybe) touched these shores bitd - Talgarth Road to be exact & the suspicous suicide of a certain Joel Pugh

Despite being consumed with the caseload of the Tate-Labianca case, prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi was alarmed by the details of Pugh’s death, and would later add it to the list of deaths that he felt could be attributed to the Manson Family. District attorney Stephen Kay, privy to all the data flying around in Manson Family case files at that time, recalled an atmosphere of deep suspicion once news of Joel’s death made its way back to Los Angeles. With Pugh’s past association with Sandra Good; the likelihood of Bruce Davis being in the UK at the time, and, not least, the circumstances of his death, Kay, was wholly sceptical of the suicide verdict. He still is.

CHARLES MANSON AND JOEL PUGH- THE FACTS

I think Bugliosi also fingers Manson as the likely murderer of both Gary Hinman and Donald 'Shorty' Shea, so probably not the case that he never killed anyone personally.

Some very dark stuff in Alex Petridis' Guardian piece today about how Manson's crimes -- or more to the point all the stories/publicity about them -- influenced pop (musicians/bands/culture) ... :( :(

I thought that was quite good, and especially liked the Trent Reznor bit at the end.

Petridis, as a Throbbing Gristle fan, is a bit too generous to Genesis P-Orridge when he says:

Genesis P-Orridge and Psychic TV’s obsession with Manson was part of a wider interest in the power structures of cults and their similarity to the relationship between artist and fan;

I think that's true, but there was also a fair amount of posturing and trying to look spooky too:

Which has not aged well.

P-Orridge has fared slightly better than American noise narcissist Boyd Rice who actively campaigned for Manson's release:

Rice and neofolk stiff right armer Michael Moynihan (Blood Axis) were mates with neo-nazi (like, an actual card carrying member of the American Nazi Party) James Mason who worshiped Manson:
