Charles I in Kings Cross: a lovely little boozer

hipipol

Run by locals and refreshingly down to earth, it was a real treat to stumble across this pub recently. Anyone else been?

A great little Kings Cross pub – King Charles I off the Caledonian Road is fun, friendly and stuffed with good ales
Lived on the Caly Rd for 2-3 years in ye olde 90s, this pub I could see from my bedroom window, had some ace nites there, lived above an offy and what became the Ruby just across the road
It was a VERY interesting place to live at the time......
Before I lived in Brixton, it was THE only bit of town where I have been offered sex, smack and crack at 7.30 am dressed in a suit and tie on me way to work........
Ah, them wuz the days.......

Who am I to say you're wrong
Called in after the Fulham game and before the train yesterday. Lovely, proper little pub. There was an orchestra going to be playing at 20:30, I hope it wasn't a big one!
Sorry for the bump.

That was probably the Phil Grispo Orchestra :D & no it is not that big.

Started drinking there in its Craic House days in the late 90s was round the corner from work & a good lunchtime boozer. Got matey with the landlord & often went straight to work pissed & stinking of booze after all nighters. For a while it was radio rental.
Became good mates with the new landlord when it reverted to the King Charles I & if anything it more crazy. After having to move out of Brixton in around 2009 I ended up living 3 doors down the road and it was actually more steps up the stairs where I lived than it was from the pub to my front door.

A great bunch of locals & interested, wedged up, regulars who took over but have not been for a couple of years. Looking back it had all the aspects of an Ian Dury song & many a good night & morning spent there. I think about 42 hours was the longest session that I can remember but a few wakes & recording sessions also.
A strange location. There was a mosque opposite which had Oscars (a gay porn cinema) next door but one & its sister straight porn cinema the other side. Well that was King's Cross as it was then not now.

Anyone been recently?

Yeah went at Xmas
it's still a lovely pub but too busy in post work clamour
By 9pm it's okay again
Great pub cat I'd never seen before. Had a photo of it sleeping on a bar stool but lost my phone since
Porn cinemas have gone, mosque still there!

Haven't been for a while but still work fairly near so might check it out again.

One other thing about the KC1 it has as an old upright piano which gets played on once a week, in a stride style, barroom jazz type of thing.

There's a bit of a circuit around that way, with the Queen's Head (kx) and the Craft Brewery one off chapel market both also having upright pianos which get played the same way on different days.

There might be more pubs in that circuit but those are the ones I know

They used to allow you to order food and have it delivered. The cafe across the road & the local Thai used to bring it plated up to your table. Way too small for a kitchen.
