Charity shops

I got some fab shoes in a charity shop yesterday. I've not bought charity shop shoes before. I don't think these had be worn outside though. £15 quid they were, the most I've ever spent on one charity shop item. It's very hard to find clothes that fit, but I do look. :)

I've bought several items with the price tickets still attached, and all those bloody stupid little plastic things

Very likely & it is not always folk throwing away stuff unused - the recyclers also take overstock from shops/stores & the grade of goods supplied to charity shops means they don't waste much time on removing tags etc.

I used to love charity shops but these days they're shit. They have pickers at the warehouse to take out anything that might be of rarity value or indeed valuable so there are few bargains or surprises to be had anymore. It's all the same shit. They're utilitarian now rather than a hunting expedition.

Not at ours we bloody don't. We have volunteers who go through it and buy all the good stuff themselves ;)
Was this this week's Time Out btw?

Not all charities have warehouses. Shelter has independant collectors for each of their shops. Nothing syphoned off, everything on sale in the shop that it's given to. I think most hospice shops work in the same way too.

Shelter here got dragged through the courts by their recyclers here a few years back & lost. Several local managers decided to hold more valuable items & pool them amongst their shops. They all lost their jobs. :(

I was regional manager for Shelter for the last 14 years and know nothing of this  I think you have the wrong charity.

Not for the Scottish shops & not for some years now. :(

It was very well reported here at the time & was what got me interested in how the system operated. Pretty certain it was Shelter. Would have been about 2001/2002.

My best charity shop buy was just before Christmas when I found a sequinned 1950s top for £2.99. :)

Bugger.

*puts dreams of finding rare book back in box*

The charity shops round where I live have quite a lot of rare books, but they're all in special glass cabinets and pretty expensive.

I did get a genuine Fendi wallet, never used, certificate of authenticity still inside, from a charity shop in my home town for about £5. I felt a bit guilty about it though cos they thought it was fake.

clapham has a some gems in it's charity shops, if you like designer clothes. I've seen a couple of pairs of genuine (but truly ugly) Gucci shoes in them quite recently.

When I was doing my degree, I got nearly all my test books from a charity shop in Kingston. It was a very big shop and had an excellent book section. Saturday morning heaven it was.

If you want designer stuff, try charity shopping around Marylebone and Kensington High Street - some gems do turn up!
