I still say the world cup is better for the neutral. it's difficult for me to get majorly excited about the Champions League when West Ham have very little chance of getting involved in it...

I prefer watching Sheff Utd than anything else, but I much much much prefer the world cup than the champions league...so not sure if I should vote d) or e)

I dunno, West Ham might finish in the top 15 this season and these days that's all you need to get into the charred remains of the European Cup. Ferenc Puskas must be turning in his grave to see what UEFA have done to the competition he and Alfredo Di Stefano made their own in the 50s. It is very dangerous and could develop into the horror of a European "superleague".

Ahhhh Puskas and Di Stefano, Real Madrid 7-3 Eitracht Frankfurt............

What memories.

Mark.

World Cup by a million miles.

It is an 'event' where many of the tournaments stay in your head forever: '66 - Bobby Moore winning etc, the magic of Mexico /Brazil/Pele '70, Holland total football/'74, West Germany 3, France 3; Germany advanced on penalties, 5-4 (1982 World Cup semifinals)
Maradona magical cheat/ '86 finals, England 3, Cameroon 2 (1990 World Cup quarterfinals), '98 final France 3, Brazil 0/Michael Owen and that game!
The rise of the small nations Cameroon /Nigeria, Korea, Denmark etc etc..

The players are playing for 'their country of all time' as opposed to their 'club of the moment'.

The World cup far more passion and a much greater spectacle.

world cup by a nautical mile. only every four years for chrissakes. champions league of course if england didn't qualify for a particular tournament but maybe even then i'd still prefer it. fucking amazing tournament that i love watching.

The world cup is certainly more memorable, i'll usually watch just about every game i can and at a push could probably still name every match and winner from france 98.

I can barely remember any group matches from the CL from more than a year or two ago.

True, although what some people might say nowadays is that the Champions League has affected a lot of that, and now people don't put the same passion into playing for their country.

I'd say 2002 was screwed up more by bad refereeing than lack of passion.

And Euro 2000 was one of the best international tournaments in living memory.

I like how the country just goes footie mad when the World Cup is on. Plus there are loads of games on terrestrial and you can just veg out in football heaven for a month.

Having said that, England would have to win the final coming from 4 down at half time against Germany or Brazil to make it even comparable to LFC's heroics in Istanbul.

Champions League - absolutely fantastic competition.

I invented it when I was a child. I sussed out that the runners up of the previous season were usually the best team the following season and therefore, the European cup should have the top two teams in it and not just the champions, to make it better.

Thats what I was wondering ! I'll pick club before country every time !

So would most people though. It's the uniqueness of the big tournaments, that they only come round every 2 summers, or only every 4 if you aren't too bothered about the Euros, that makes it special.

Most people choose their club team over country on the week to week basis, but also get engrossed in the big things in a more intense way for that short duration. IMO

Thats obvious though isn't it ! The national team doesn't play every week

I don't see why it has to be about choosing one or the other though?

I hope West Ham win the Premiership and I hope England win the World Cup. They are about equal in terms of likelihood... :D

But thats what the poll is asking

Do you prefer the CL/World Cup/Domestic league so we are being asked to choose ! If it was a toss up between the world cup never happening again or division 4 being stopped I'd choose the world cup without even thinking about it ! I'm a Wycombe fan 1st ( then Charlton ) and the England !

I voted for the World Cup because I saw this poll as essentially as a which was more important of that or the "Champions" League, not because I want England to win more than Spurs (I don't).

For what it's worth there is a major thought in my mind that no English club has actually won the European Cup legitimately since Heysel because neither Man Utd or Liverpool won the league the year before. That isn't just me being a bitter pedant because I think if Tottenham won after finishing in 2nd, 3rd or 4th it would be a false win.
