Champions League 19/20

Tremendous effort from Lyon who finished about 6/7th in the French League . City excellent performance should have/ could have had another goal .

Atalanta have been sensational in the Italian League and CL this season so Id like them to get through . Good news tonite is that two of the cartel went out , hopefully Napoli will Put a poor Barcelona team out of their misery and the Bayern squad go down with chronic food poisoning tomorrow lunchtime .

If Chelsea do somehow turn this around (never say never! :D), how would it compare to Liverpool and Tottenham's SF escapades last season?
Nowhere near as good :D

Munich look pretty imperious right now. Brushed Chelsea aside and looked like they could of gone up a gear if needed.

On paper (which is not always the outcome) this looks like a City v Munich semi final. Over the season Munich have looked solid (won their last 18 or 19 games) whereas City have been inconsistent all season including a recent semi final loss to Arsenal. Not a forgone by any stretch but will probably decide the tournament winners!

What could go possibly wrong against Bayern Munich when you are 3-0 down in the first leg? Well conceede a penalty, give the ball away for the second and then allow the thiird goal scorer unmarked access into your penalty box and so on and so on. Ok very weak team with six more youth players on the bench but aside from Zouma .who depite being a defence that conceded four goals played well , a below par performance tbh .Really comes to something when we can say at least it wasnt as bad as Arsenals efforts against Bayern.

Disapointed with the sacking of Sarri despite him winning the league and making the cup final tbh. On one hand you can say that he should have done better as they signed Ronaldo but precisley because Ronaldo is in the team everything has to go through him rather than Sarri being allowed to build a team around his sytem and tactics. Sarri and Bielsa are both system managers with rehearsed routines and movements who rely on buying players that fit their style they need time not galacticos. Guardiola Pochettino and Simeone are to some extent similar. Pirlo will only be a short term replacement and Juventus will need a rebuild probably before but definitely after Ronaldo goes. Bad news for Chelsea ir Sarri's sacking s that it makes selling Jorgino more difficult. Wonder if Sarri will go back to Napoli?

Interesting table showing how the new formula for income from the CL means that the coefficient is now financially almost as important than the prize money . Benefits the old school and even if a club outside the top coefficients does well its increased TV income from a good run doesn't offset the coefficient money of elite clubs going out early.

Tonight we all cheer for Atalanta.

For two months, the wailing of ambulances cut into Bergamo’s soul. It knew no difference between bleak days and dark, tortured nights that came to seem endless. “The constant noise, you had to kill it in some ways, it was getting in your mind,” Franz Barcella says. “The news on television looked nothing like as bad as what those noises will tell you. You had fear, but it was more than fear for yourself.”

The cruelty of what had hit Bergamo, which became the centre of Europe’s worst Covid-19 outbreak in March, was hard to reconcile. So was the spectrum of emotions when, on 10 March, Atalanta beat Valencia to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The last-16 second leg was played behind closed doors in Spain, with the extent of the disaster now becoming clear. Boyhood supporter Alberto Savi watched at home as Josip Ilicic swept in the team’s, and his own, fourth goal of a night that should have been the stuff of fantasy. The commentators balanced their own incredulity by reminding Bergamo’s citizens to resist any urge to convene on the streets.

“Nobody went outside,” Savi says. “It was quite strange. You’d imagine there would be a big celebration. But there was only silence, and sirens moving through the town.”

Almost like the entire system is rigged from top to bottom :hmm:

Game of two halves this , Atalanta very tired used all subs PSG dominate second half and equalise in the 80th minute . Must be said that Anthony Taylor has done his bit with a couple of bookings of Atalanta players for niggling fouls
