Challenging Discrimination at Interviews

Well if you don't like something that someone has said, you're within your rights to say so.

I just felt the person leading the group discussion should have, but he just nodded in agreement and let it pass, I'm not gonna work for a person like that, who do you think I am?

Yeah, I probably wouldn't want to work there either. And if I was annoyed I'd probably have asked him how these views played out for HIV sufferers in the organisation.

No, but I was very shocked and didn't really know what to say, and, at the same time I was waiting for an official challenge.

Maybe I should just have a few beers

Well after you've had a few beers and relaxed a bit - if you still feel strongly, write and ask them how the views expressed by the panel member play out in terms of HIV+ employees and service users.

Use my phrasing if you decide to go for it. BBVs is too generic and only HIV is protected as such.

so could challenging somebodys religious beliefs though.
not just hurtful. Potentially illegal as well.

I think if any of the interviewers had raised any objections, like how can your strong christian faith be compatible with working in a health case environment when some of your patients might have those medical conditions... Then I bet they would have been on the end of legal action faster than you can say employment tribunal.

The panel should have objected - without doing so they risk looking like they support such a damaging and crass opinion.

I would ask the company/trust for clarification on their stance, and tell them the story. Hopefully the panel will be put on the spot by the HR department and warned/educated on how to react in future in a way that doesn't alienate potential candidates.

And yes, it is worth it. So are a few beers!

I would have mentioned all those haemophiliacs who got hepatitis and so on from contaminated transfusions and see how he reacted, since he's clearly trying to slag off homosexuals but without mentioning teh cock.

Had you spoken up, you may have gotten the job. I would have said something, calmly disagreeing and saying just how judgemental and labelling his rhetoric was. I may have also said that whilst I respected his religious beliefs perhaps they would becoime an issue in the kind of job he was being interviewed for.

Maybe. Could be a JW though.

For being me............I got there 15 minutes late and maybe not fitting in very well
Is there a bit more to this than we already know?

You went to an interview and arrived 15 mins late, and all the candidates are being interviewed together? One of them is going off on a loony rant about viruses and God, and somewhere in the proceedings you get chucked out "for being you". Much as I'd like not to sound incredibly sceptical, I can't help thinking that we're nowhere near getting the whole story here...

And what is the discrimination that you allege is occurring?

Half the group were eliminated after an hour or so, the second group went on to do more exercises.

The loonie guy was saying the most important value is loyalty, and then went on to say God punished people who weren't loyal and weren't living in accordance to Christian principles by being inflicted with BBV's

I was surprised the panel didn't challenge him, I tried my best in the rest of the group interview but the whole episode shook me up and a bit. I literally kicked out but rather part of a collective culling process. I said kicked out because I didn't think the process was professional and felt badly treated

This sounds as if you're describing an assessment centre, and that dealing with that statement was one of the exercises.

Nodding does not always mean agreement. It also lets the listener know they have your attention.
I think the guy was some kind of psycho analyst, the whole thing seemed kie a therapy session, but I went to a job interview. I couldn't work for people who leave discrimination unchallenged and wondered whether people on this board thought such behaviour was acceptable at an interview.:(

It sounds like the 'discrimination' was part of the interview.....tell me more about the job please...I want to understand what they may have been looking for.
