Cerys Matthews on 6Music

hmm, i wonder if a daily show will see her forced into a land of scheduling and playlists though.

She;s doing Sunday afternoons at the moment and it's all her own choices and it's wonderful

I would've thought she will have to play the 6 music playlist, with the odd 'free play' thrown in. It's still great news though, I love her voice on the old wireless :)

It's ok to do your own choices for a weekly show or an odd stand in - but for a regular 3-hour 5-day slot - that would be pretty tough. Marc Riley does it for a 2 hour, 4 day slot - but only by filling a third of the time with King Creosote and Jeffrey Lewis.

IMHO the 6 Music DJs should be provided with a playlist but not made to play it, giving them free choice to play what they want and to have the latest stuff as filler to keep their shows current.

I don't think it'd be that hard to plan 5 days of tunes that way. In fact it'd be my ideal job.

I'm sure that does apply in some case, eg. Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone every Sunday - two and a half hours in which they never go anywhere near the playlist.

The evening and weekend shows indeed have a different policy. I'm talking specifically about the daytime shows.

I'm sick of hearing exactly the same new tunes over and over again continuously. I don't mind it once or twice but hearing the same track every day, once per DJ is a tad annoying.

Good news! I'd been off 6Music for a while, but I've really enjoyed the shows she's done for them.

Editor gets his way again. :)

Cerys has got Larry Love from Alabama 3 coming on in a minute. That should be interesting!

More Taffies on the radio!

For my sins I'd actually been giving her show a miss (although to be fair I'm at work when she's on currently :p) but reading through this thread I will have a listen on iPlayer.

Did the music selection change when she moved to weekdays?

became more eclectic I'd say, and speaking personally, more in line with my taste.

Good news for Cerys fans- she is getting a permanent slot on Sunday mornings from April 4th, following the departure of Jon Richardson from 6music. Article here

The new Sunday line-up is looking pretty good:

10am-12pm: Cerys Matthews
12pm-2pm: Adam Buxton's Big Mix Tape
2pm-4pm: The Huey Show
4pm-6pm: Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service
6pm-8pm: Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone
8pm-10pm: 6 Mix
10pm-12pm: Guy Garvey's Finest Hour

Something for everyone

The things Cocker plays make me think that the conversation went like this

'Will you be interested in a sunday afternoon show Mr. Cocker?'

'So long as I can play whatever the shit I like'

'You might be restricted to some sort of playlist'

'Not interested then'

'OK play what you like, just work for us please'

Exactly :D

Every now and again he plays something odd (for him) and I suspect a playlist track has got in, but it's with the regularity that most people get free plays :D

It's alright, he's just an eejit who didn't realise the clocks had gone forward  :D

To compound everything, I'm pretty sure his first track is one Huey just played while covering for Jarvis  :D

Great show today:cool:

To celebrate Maida Vale Studios reaching the grand old age of 75 Cerys Matthews takes a historical tour through one of the music industry's most well loved buildings.

Yeah, I enjoyed that show this morning too. It's amazing what sounds the workshop were coming up with so many years ago
