central london record shops

Paulie Tandoori

shut it you egg!
Anyone with any recommendations for record shops in central london that are still open and that sell house tunes? Following the demise of Disque up Chapel St market, i'm having problems knowing where to go. Release the Groove appears to have gone now, and I'm aware that lots in Berwick St are also no more.

Any ideas guys and gals?

The record shop under Vinyl Bar in Camden (Inverness St) used to sell a fair bit of house - been a while since Iv been in there tho

Have you tried know how records on buck street in Camden?

I know they stock a selection of house

Theres also D'Arblay Street around the corner too with blackmarket and uptown both selling house

Never really floated my boat at Black Market but maybe i need to stop being so picky. Might have a cycle up to Camden and then drop down Soho way.

Thanks for suggestions people, much appreciated :)

Been in the massive new Rough Trade off Brick Lane yet?? Still being completed but respect to them for trying to open something like that with all the mp3 "death of vinyl" etc stuff happening..loads of tunage in there:cool:

www.primalrecords.com

take advantage of the weak dollar exchange rate and piss cheap UPS rates!
you have to wait about a week for your records but it's sells just about the best selection of house around (imo)

or you can brave the trendies in Phonica on Poland Street

or www.urbangroovez.co.uk which is like a UK version of Primal but once you have added the postage on it's about the same to get from Primal (and Primal has a much more upfront selection).

If you are at Groovers4life tonight everything in my bag is from Primal :D

Second shout for Uptown and Blackmarket records. Can't get much more central than D'Arblay Street. Seemed ok last time I was there.

I prefer to buy my tracks online and burn to CD these days though.

Was that the one in Endell St?
Closed down a while ago..think it's a clothes shop now..got some good stuff in there:(

Well, glad to report that both Uptown and Black Market appear to be in rude health. Picked up some corking tunes this afternoon, hooray for that. Cheers for pointers, people :)

I still don't think you can beat standing next to a counter, spending a few hours skipping thru tracks, tapping your foot, sometimes even nodding your head :D You can have a chat, get chucked some things you wouldn't haven't looked at twice for some reason otherwise and occasionally, it's the bomb in there.

Disque has stopped irl selling cos shop rental was too much compared to takings but they were hoping to keep selling via net with desire to reopen a shop as well hopefully. Not checked out Rough Trade shop yet, not sure where it is even and i work round the corner.

Right, off for some more mixing and see y'all at G4L this evening :)

Phonica's got a very good and easy to use website if you can't be bothered with the occasional sneer. I order on the website and pick up from the shop, minimises contact with the demi-gods behind the counter.

Actually, it's only a couple of them that are patronising. I tend to get a totally different attitude depending if I'm there after work in my suit or on a saturday morning in my jeans and tee. Which isn't very cool.

Never heard of Phonica before which is a pity as it's only round the corner from Uptown and BM. Ah well, maybe next time, i think i've caught the vinyl bug again :)

Apparetly Vinyl Junkies on Berwick Street (where Sister Ray used to be) is good for house music...

I would've thought the Music & Video Exchange had a load of house stuff. Not sure which of their shops would be the best but you can look on their website for more details.

yes, they have an extensive selection of house, categorised just a tad anally imho. Nice shop though and friendly knowledgeable peeps who run it.

What sort of stuff are you looking for? I mean, I went to disque for non-house electronic music, and if that's your bag then sounds of the universe may be worth a look. Elsewise I'm afraid it's black market or phonica as said by posters before.

i've been a vinyl widow for about 2 years, avoiding young men who are offering me lucious 12" treats, but nevermind. i looked at RTG website and rung them up so glad to hear that they're still gwan as i liked iti in there. picked up some top stuff in Uptown :)
