i really wouldn't bother about it dave -tbh we have slowly been turned into the harlem globe trotters of world football we have got to go over to japan yet for a errr... preseason... after our season starts next week.... and we have to play whoever the english champions are at theirs... the turnout at the united game shows you just how arsed the fans are about it tbh

we've always had comedy defending - its what we're all about

I think Varga, Thompson and Telfer are all certain to be in the first team squad next year and they're ages are 33, 33 and 35 respectively. I mean it's nowhere near as bad as it was a few years ago but I still think it's too old and from what I've seen of your pre-season the young players you need to come in and take over just don't have the quality.

I know this has been covered already, but Varga barely played at all last year. He's not a first choice, he's cover for McManus who is 23. Thompson barely played last year and is halfway out the door, his position on the left was largely filled by Mcgeady who is 20 and Maloney who is 24 and won the Scottish player of the year award. Telfer is widely expected to be replaced at right back by Mark Wilson who is 23, if we ever sign a proper left back so he doesn't have to keep playing out of position.

So in conclusion; you know dick about dick.

Therefore; I won't even bother talking about your judgements on the quality of the young players.

Because we both know that you know dick about dick.

I don't really know or care much about Celtic your right but one of my friends is a season ticket holder and he's fairly depressed about the team, he was their last night by the way and he also called it a shambles.

There's a big tendency amongst Celtic supporters for hyperbole. There's nothing that Celtic fans love more than calling the defence a shambles and claiming that they're going to give up their season ticket, then never actually doing it.

pmsl.

gate reciepts, merchandise.

Are you seriously telling me that Celtic are a richer club than Man Utd? :D

From my very first post and in each subsequent one I've been talking about the squad not the first team. That's why I used the word 'squad' and not the words 'first team'. I hope this helps and that you calm down and not get so angry when people make points about Celtic on an internet forum.

Can't agree. We had the same financial disadvantage when we beat them 4-3 under MON in 2001 at Old Trafford. That Celtic team was capable of taking on anyone and not being afraid. Right now I'm terrified of what's gonna happen in the CL.

Both teams last night were very experimental. Let's just say the wee man's experiment didn't pay off. Be nice if he'd admit it now and then though :(

One off's you might win once in 10 games. But financial clout rules football.

no, behave yourself - all i'm saying is that its pretty obvious that united are pretty hamstrung as regards signings at the moment.... yes carrick has signed (how fucken much? are they drink testing fergie at the moment? but only after selling one of their greatest assets to raise funds

Neva, you're right on all your points. I don't understand why IJ is getting worked up. IJ cut out the long drinking sessions between posts.

Sorry I know it is off topic but the 18m for carrick is plain stupidity on SAF's part. Crazy money.

I'm hoping it's tied in with various provisos on what we win like a few of our other big money deals have been. Something like 12 million to Spurs right now with 2 million agents fees and then four million dependant on winning various trophies.

Even then it would still be a con though. It's just another example of a good player being overpriced because he's English and it's United that are buying.

Aye, yer hole you were. In your initial reply you were telling us that Varga, Thompson and Telfer were first team certainties.

But even if you were talking about the squad it's still not true. Apart from those three, Balde and Lennon, the only other old duffer in the whole squad is Mo Camara and he won't be there next season either. For the most part, we have a squad full of young promising players with varying degrees of experience.

This is the Celtic first team squad:

http://www.celticfc.net/squad/squad.asp

If you click on their picture you can see their dates of birth. It may also be worth mentioning that we have several players starring for Scotland in the European u19s championship right now and helping them reach their first European final since the early Eighties. One of our players was even named player of the tournament.

Now, I don't expect you to know all that. However, is it really too much to ask that you cease making such silly judgements about a team for whom your entire knowledge seems to be based on one friendly game and a conversation with a guy in the pub?

I'm not angry, far from it. I just think you're talking pish and would like you to stop. I'm sure if I posted on a thread about Man Utd and said that Man Utd will never win anything with so many Portugese players in their squad, people would be fairly quick to point out that I appear to know nothing about Man Utd.

And they'd be right to do so.

Okay I'm not going to bother replying properly to you because I read all that and it doesn't seem like you can take any criticism of your team at all without resorting to insults and accusations.

stop being such a baby
why are you so surprised to be told you're talking a load of balls when by your own admission

I know it's only a friendly, but boy was there a gulf of talent on the field tonight - Utd were all over them!

I was a Celtic fan I wouldn't exactly be filled with enthusiasm for the season ahead.

Anyone else watch the game?

Hail! Hail! The Celts are here!

A fine opening day win against Killie.

Normal service has been resumed. Thank you for your patience...

It's Grand Old team to play for... :D

Just thought this needed a bit of an airing for those who still believe everything they see in pre-season friendlies and wish to talk about 'gulf in class'

There was still a gulf last night. Just United were shit up front and didn't put away chances they should :)

i missed the end, what was the final score 0-1 unit? 0-2, 0-3 maybe - reading on here its hard to tell - how many did united win by last night?

Tell me was this gulf in talen evident in Uniteds 3-2 win at OT as well?

Celtic were outclassed again last night, but despite their superiority, United were unable to score and missed a penalty.

It was an undeserved win for Celtic, but good luck to them.

absolute balls.

utter utter nonsense.

despite the handicap of bobo balde and paul telfer in 'defence' and the ridiculousness of playing graveson on the right united still couldn't score in the first half - dundee could have scored against that - celtic were pish last night but united were even worse, but no team was 'outclassed' last night

Looks like you saw a different game tome and Strachan:
The Celtic boss acknowledged his side had been given a first-half lesson by the Old Trafford who weaved some impressive patterns - albeit without providing Boruc with any real threat.
Maybe the press got it wrong too?
Nakamura gave Gordon Strachan's side an unlikely lead with a stunning free-kick and keeper Boruc ensured they kept all three points with a tremendous penalty save from Louis Saha.
But Sir Alex Ferguson will have sleepless nights for a long time over how his side lost a game they had dominated and Celtic beat them to the next stage of the competition.

While United could legitimately claim to have played the best football last night, creating a succession of chances with their assured, flamboyant play, there was no end product and they lacked the belief and conviction of their spirited opponents.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/topst...objectid=18136140&siteid=94762-name_page.html
etc etc etc

I think the fools mean those dizzying runs by Ronaldo. You know the ones where he zigged and zagged and forgot to control the ball let alone keep hold of it. But his hair looked lovely.

sorry, maybe i can't see it but can you show the direct quote there? it just seems to be newspaper speak around a quote

Celtic were pish in the first half, that i will and have granted you but in no way were they outclassed by uniteds strongest team lastnight -= a fair result

of course they did - they daily record is written in fucken crayons - they are idiots with typewriters.

You're quoting an English paper and the Daily Ranger and expect to be taken seriously? Must try harder.
Err, I saw the game with my own eyes, but I guess you'll keep on ignoring every report that doesn't fit in with your glorious version of the evening.

Here's another report for you to dismiss:
Sir Alex Ferguson's team fashioned few opportunities last night, despite an overwhelming superiority in technique
http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,1953945,00.html
Anyway, I can't be arsed with this. I'm happy that Celtic won but they were undoubtedly fortunate to do so.

This denial is bordering on bizarre now. Perhaps you could list the handful of papers you're prepared to accept match reports from for future reference?

The denial is bordering on bizarre, i quite agree -the top team in the english premiership with a full strength squad got beat by a scottish team at their place and only beat them with a very suspect penalty at their own place - even with bobo balde in defnce, wayne rooney couldn't break it down - there are big questions to be asked about the state of the english game and no mistake. But still the denial and the rewriting of games.

Can you talk me through the saves that boruc had to make during this 'outclassing'?

Chorlton said:

So can I add the Guardian to your list of bad, bad writers too, because they clearly said: "Sir Alex Ferguson's team fashioned few opportunities last night, despite an overwhelming superiority in technique"

I'd say an "overwhelming superiority" is much the same as "outclassing."
No doubt you won't, so let's leave it at that.

I don't believe everything I read in the press but I know what I saw last night. I'm not even sure why you're still banging on about it, to be honest. You got a result, against the odds, so what's your beef?

my 'beef' is with, and i think you know this really, the word 'outclassing' - i know that these things can be subjective, but you first of all tried to tell me that strachan himself thought this, but have thus far failed to provide a quote - celtic were mince last night, got a result and, at risk of repeating myself but i fear thats the stage we're at in this meeting of minds, despite some strange tactics in playing graveson in the midfield and balde at all, united never were able to break down celtic into creating a scoring opportunity never mind a goal.

Now feel free to throw more opinions of journalists in stead of your own at me but thats how these green tinted eyes saw the first half.

second half was a little better from celtic and deservedly took the spoils - something that united were unable to do in the first half, and with that celtic deservedly took the points
